Mike’s 3rd Military Overlander Conversion

This post contains affiliate links.

Long before #vanlife or tiny living were Instagram-worthy pursuits, Mike was in Africa living out of an overlander. He has converted 3 separate rigs of his own since then, using them to travel all over — and he loves waking up in his own bed with his own things no matter where he goes.

This rig was a military vehicle with only 5,000 miles on it when he purchased it. He spent $18,000 on the vehicle, and another $75k or so converting into the ultimate overlander. You’d never guess from the bright orange exterior that the inside has a cozy farmhouse vibe! Enjoy the tour below.

This clip was such fun to see. I never cease to be amazed as to how inventive people can be!
Who would have thought a large and not too pretty military truck could be converted to a very cool living space. Lots I liked here: the kitchen — of course!! — The computer set-up — small stools that have storage and of course a cooler/fridge in the cab and more! Lots to like here!!!

Uh, I don’t think so. I will agree that its compact. I will agree its functional. I will agree that it utilises space to the Nth degree. But adorable! Nah, I don’t think so. My opinion may not be yours.

Is the truck diesel and what kind of mpg does it get? I could totally live in this. So classy and well thought out.

      Yup, it’s quote:

      “1994 Stewart & Stevenson
      M1079 van
      6.6 Caterpillar turbo diesel engine
      Allison 7 speed automatic transmission
Full time 4×4, CTIS, air ride cab, air brakes & more!”

Like most of these types of vehicles it gets 8-10 MPG… Fully loaded he’s usually around 22,640 lbs and it’s about 19,000 empty…
