Couple embracing in front of a snow-covered shuttle bus in a forest.

Robin and Wayne live in the awesome shuttle bus home he converted back in 2022. Their bus has a full recording studio, a wood stove, and plenty of other clever features that make it perfect for full-time bus life.

We had the privilege of interviewing them about what inspired them to start bus life, how long the process took, and what they love the most — and least — about living on the road. Enjoy their story in their own words below!

Compact SUV with a built-in bed for outdoor adventures and small space living.

You might remember our post on VanLab from a couple of years ago, and since then the company has expanded its offerings. It most recently released this super simple IKEA-style kitchen and bed kit that fits easily into 76 different SUVs!

The kit goes in without any fasteners, so it can be removed without causing any damage to the vehicle. This means, if you want to try out nomadic life without a big commitment, you can hit the road in an afternoon! The kitchen kit alone starts at $1,950, and it’s an additional $400 to get the bed section. To get it with cushions, it’s a grand total of $2,800 (but at the moment, the cushions are sold out). What do you think of this system?

Woman's garage transformed into a cozy 450 sq ft tiny home with outdoor deck.

Anne stumbled across this gorgeous lot of land in New Zealand with ocean views on one end and gorgeous bush views on the other end. When she bought it, all it had was a garage and a small utility shed. Instead of choosing to build a larger home closer to the road, she decided to make the garage into her home and put a deck off the back with private views of the landscape behind her!

Eventually, she built some small cottages on the front of the property, which she rents out on Airbnb. That helps her pay the bills and make great use of the property she has. Just wait until you see her eclectic/shabby-chic cottage design!

Small red cabin with porch on skids, ideal for tiny house living or getaway.

This is a lovely South Georgia cabin with 288 square feet of living space inside and a 6×12 covered porch. You step into the open-concept living room, where you can fit a couch and entertainment center. The kitchen currently only has a sink and microwave, but you could add a hot plate and refrigerator.

The back of the house includes a private bedroom large enough for a queen mattress, and a small bathroom with a shower stall and residential toilet. This would make a great guest cabin, but with some clever storage, it could also be home sweet home. It’s for sale in Fitzgerald, Georgia for $48,000.

Charming park model tiny house featuring a covered porch, ideal for small space living and outdoor r.

One incredible perk of park models is often the built-in covered porches with the units! The square footage doesn’t count toward the 399 square feet of interior living space, so you get an outdoor living room.

The other great feature is that the wider footprint makes it easier to fit a first-floor bedroom inside, which is now becoming more standard in tiny homes as people realize they don’t enjoy climbing into a loft at night! This house has a spacious bedroom with a closet, and the kitchen has all full-sized appliances. There’s not much you’d be missing if you purchased this home for sale in Texas for $79,000.

Modern tiny house rental with sleek exterior and outdoor deck in a natural setting.

This is an adorable tiny house on wheels designed by the owner and built by professional tiny house builders in New Zealand. Jill uses the house as an Airbnb rental after retiring from podiatry.

The sweet house has two lofts, one for lounging and another with a standing loft and a queen-sized bed. To get to the main bedroom, there’s a handy retractable staircase (which I think should be a standard tiny house feature!). The house also has a dishwasher in the galley kitchen, and a washing machine in the cozy bathroom. What do you like most about this design?

Two-story chalet cabin with thermal pool in snowy forest setting.

Here’s a gorgeous two-story chalet in the woods of Canada that’s surrounded by stunning evergreen forest. While the interior living space is fairly compact, the large decks that wrap around two sides of the house nearly double the area to relax. And did I mention the 4-season shipping container thermal pool?

The bedrooms are on the first floor of the chalet, each with a queen-sized bed. Upstairs, there’s an open-concept living room with a wood stove that flows into the kitchen/dining area. You can enjoy meals while soaking in views through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Which feature do you think is the most remarkable?
