I think most of us would agree that a 5,000 square foot house for two people is…excessive. That’s why this couple decided to sell their mansion and build their very own tiny house on wheels with all the bells and whistles. They’ve significantly reduced their overall footprint, and we should commend them for that.
Considering all the high-end features in this build, the $125,000 they spent in materials is actually pretty reasonable! And I love that they set out to do the build themselves when they probably could have afforded to contract it out. Plus the entire home is off-grid, with an awesome solar system and even a composting toilet!

Meet Derrick and Kelly: They’ve been living in their DIY vintage-and-antique-filled THOW now for 2.5 years. They’ve moved it three times, and lived in both California and Montana, taking their home with them.
Living tiny has allowed them to tackle their debt and still enjoy amazing vacations like a 3-week trip to Europe! Altogether, the materials for their tiny home cost around $35,000, and nearly 60% of them were recycled or reclaimed, which makes their home super unique.

Scott and Ashley over at Hive Drive Bus just sent us an awesome video tour and vlog of their stay at the Eagle Feather Tipi near Las Vegas! This is such a cool tiny space located on a 160 acre ranch featuring everything from horse rides to rodeos.
The tipi sits on a spacious deck with a fire pit and outdoor couch. There’s a small outdoor kitchen with propane stove and sink for basic cooking, and an amazing outdoor shower with desert views. When you go inside you’ll find a queen-sized bed sitting in the center of the tipi, and a small floor seating area.

The Barefoot Bandits wanted to get away from the rat-race and spend more time together as a family, so they sold everything and bought and converted a bus into their full-time home.
Now mom, Jacq, “wild-schools” her kids as they travel Oregon (COVID-permitting). They created the most beautiful home, with a giant counter for food prep, school, and arts & crafts, as well as a giant shower! Jacq’s husband was too tall for the curvature of the bus, so they cut out a hole and extended it an extra two feet in the air.
The two older girls have their own special bunk spaces, and the youngest sleeps with mom and dad. The cactus mural on the outside of the bathroom makes the place special. Enjoy the photos below and the full video tour with Tiny Home Tours!

If you’ve been following Tiny House Talk for any amount of time, you’ve probably seen the handiwork of videographer Travis Cosentino (@travis_travels on Instagram) — he does the filming for Tiny Home Tours, which we show you quite frequently.
But did you know he’s a van-dweller? He’s been living in his stealthy conversion now for about a year, and only spent $5,500 on the build, most of which went to mechanical repairs. He loves meeting like-minded people and sharing their stories, plus he gets to travel all around the country as he interviews.
Travis’ home is wonderfully simple, but he did manage to fit a sneaky toilet into this itty bitty build! Watch the video tour to learn more.

Wait until you see this amazing tree house vacation spot built over 2.5 years with recycled and reclaimed materials! Dubbed Sir Cedric’s Cedar Tree house by Scott, the builder, the 400-square foot place is whimsical and magical.
It was built around a 4-foot-wide Western Red Cedar, and Scott decided not to put any steel rods or connectors into the tree so it could continue to grow uncompromised. Inside there’s a kitchen, living room, and queen-sized bed. Just outside the tree house you’ll find a magical outdoor shower and a practical outhouse with a cool stone sink.

Magical 400 Sq. Ft. Treehouse Built From Reclaimed Materials

When his parents sold the family vacation cabin so they could buy their dream home, this man decided to buy some Canadian prairie land and build a 96 square foot cabin that could fit his family of four and keep them warm in the subarctic temperatures of Treaty 6 Territory. They live off-grid on the 141 acre property for about 125 days a year.
He didn’t have a lot of time to get the cabin built before winter set in, but in 12 days spread out over about 3 months, he and a couple friends managed to build this fully-functional little cabin for just about $3,000 (USD) in 2016. Since then they’ve added solar panels, a propane heater, and other little touches which brought the cost up to about $4,300. Still incredibly impressive for such a little space!
By keeping the cabin under 100 square feet, he’s able to keep the land labelled as agricultural, which saves on property taxes. He made an awesome video about his build, and a second video outlining his costs, which are great resources for anyone interested in doing something similar!

Bruce Winckler saw a lovely whimsical treehouse crafted by Daniel Huscroft and Timothy Lindberg, and thought that kind of dwelling would fit perfectly on Vancouver Island where he lived. He asked the builders if they’d create a cottage in the same vein, and they agreed.
And so this Hansel and Gretel cottage came off the pages of a storybook and into real life! It’s about 450 square feet, not including the loft bedroom, and while the exterior has fairy tale charm, the interior has a clean and contemporary feel with all the creature comforts.

Meet Lindsay, a 63-year-old English woman who had a dream to start an eco village in Morocco — and did just that! Using a 2-brick mold, she and volunteers have created some 10,000 adobe bricks over the past 5 years to create a number of structures in the village including her home, the “boat house,” volunteer accommodations and a “yin-yang” retreat.
The Assilah Eco Village currently accepts between 2-3 volunteers to live and work at the village in 3-week-or-longer stints. It’s a great chance to learn how to build with natural materials like bamboo, cob, straw, and eucalyptus wood. You can request to work with her (COVID-travel-permitting) here.
