Miranda and Kyle had done the “mattress-in-the-back-of-the-car” camping for shorter trips plenty of times, but when they couldn’t travel in 2020, it made them pause and consider what they really wanted out of life. Eventually they decided to purchase a van and have it professionally converted, so they could hit the road sooner rather than later.
The “Astro Van” has a great layout, with a shower and Nature’s Head composting toilet in the front of the van, and a large dinette in the back that becomes their bed at night. They have a great rooftop deck with a fixed ladder, as well. Enjoy their tour!

The Birch House is a 28-foot DIY tiny home on wheels built in Arlington, Washington, and its whole identity comes from one material choice: Norwegian birch throughout the interior. Pale, tight-grained birch is the backbone of Scandinavian interiors precisely because it bounces light around a small room, and paired with an all-white galley kitchen it makes the inside feel considerably larger than 28 feet.
The layout is straightforward and well judged. A loft bedroom is reached by storage stairs rather than a ladder, a living area sits behind sliding glass doors that pull in a lot of daylight, and the bathroom carries subway tile with a rain shower. Underneath, it’s serious: a triple-axle Iron Eagle trailer built specifically for tiny houses, carrying roughly 14,000 lbs at 28 ft long, 7.5 ft wide, and 13.5 ft tall, with a metal roof, manual jacks, a 25-gallon onboard water tank, and an instant water heater.
Editor’s note: the Birch House was listed at $60,000 in 2023 and has sold. The owners were candid that it was sold as-is with a few small projects outstanding — worth remembering as a model of honest DIY selling. Current listings are linked below.

Inside, the Guthrie packs a surprising amount of livability into its compact footprint. The modern farmhouse interior includes a galley kitchen with solid walnut countertops, a loft bedroom accessible via storage-integrated stairs, corner bench seating with hidden storage, a full bathroom with a 36″x36″ shower and flush toilet, and space for a washer/dryer combo. Despite all these features, it weighs under 8,000 pounds.

Cazzy and Bradley are one amazing couple who have been globetrotting since 2016! Their travels have taken them from South America to Sri Lanka to Scotland and the US. While they’ve taken plenty of planes, trains, and automobiles to get around the earth so far, their latest mode of transportation has been their self-converted van.
