Check out this 350 sq. ft. low-maintenance and virtually indestructible modern cabin on stilts with steel shutters.
The owner’s hired Olson Kundig Architects to build a weekend cabin that could provide them with a rural retreat during their get-aways to Washington’s Olympic National Park. Since the cabin would be left uninhabited for weeks at a time steel shutters were used to completely enclose and secure the cabin when the owners are away.
As you walk up the stairs to the front door and through a small entry way you will see the bathroom on the left and straight ahead the main living space. The living room is very spacious and open with a dining area and compact kitchen. There is a ladder that leads up to the sleeping loft. The walls, floors and ceilings are lined in timber panels.
A large overhanging roof provides the balcony and windows shade from the natural sunlight. Exterior panels open and close using a custom steel rod with hardware that was originally designed for large barn doors. These steel panels can be opened using a mechanical system of gears, drive shafts and U-joints, which are set into motion by turning a wheel.
It was built using steel and structural insulated panels (SIPs). Most of the cabin was prefabricated off site to help preserve the natural landscaping.
The entire cabin is up on stilts to protect it from occasional floods. The cantilevered roof gives solar shading while protecting the structure from strong storms.

I think you will find this modern polygon cabin interesting. And quite possibly a cool place to live.
Built on a concrete foundation this small cabin serves two purposes for the owners. Used as a sculpture studio and to accommodate guests this small space was designed by Jeffrey S. Poss, Architect and WORKUS Studio.
You will see galvanized steel is used as siding that also extends upward where the architects continued the use of this material in a zigzag shape for the roof. The use of red cedar wood on the inside of the studio gives this space a warm feel.
The spacious creative area used to make sculptures is located on the ground floor with the guest room located in the loft. Perched up 130 steps from the edge of Lake George in upstate New York, I could see the beauty in living in this small space. How about you?
There is a powder room (although not pictured here), so all you would need to add is a functional kitchen and you are ready to live here full time. On the lower level in the main space you will see there is built-in storage on one wall for hiding away belongings and large sliding doors on the other side to invite nature in.
These large glass sliding doors provide beautiful views of the lake below and the ability to catch a nice breeze.

Do you think living simply could be easy with this tiny house? Although it’s only 100 square feet it has just about everything you need.
In this post I’m excited to share the Hummingbird Loft with you. It’s a 100 sq. ft.tiny house with a sleeping & storage loft made of steel-frame and it’s built on a foundation (not on wheels).
When you walk up the porch and through the front door into the main level you’re greeted by the living room and kitchen.
Keep walking towards the back and you’ll find the bathroom. The ladder takes you up to the sleeping loft and storage area. One of the sleeping lofts is above the front porch, the storage loft is over the living area, and the other sleeping loft is in the rear above the kitchen/bathroom area.

I thought you’d like to tour Karen’s 265 sq. ft. backyard cottage in Berkeley, CA.
Karen originally intended to use her backyard tiny house for her own personal use but she soon realized renting it out would be a great way to earn extra income.
As you walk onto the front porch and through the french doors to go inside you are greeted by the living area, kitchen and bathroom. And when you go upstairs you have the sleeping loft with storage cabinets.

I’m excited to share these hanging tents with you because if you like treehouses and camping you’ll probably love this. Yes, camping in the trees would be awesome, but how? Check this out… it’s a tree tent called the RooMoon made by the Hanging Tent Company. It takes tent camping to the next level (literally). Handcrafted and designed by graduate student, Rufus Martin in Dorset, England. Since he presented this at Byrson School as a final project it has been his full-time business since. So how is this contraption made?
The outside material is a durable canvas that can stand any weather. Flooring is made of lightweight pine and very portable just like the entire tent itself. Each board attaches together making it easy to roll up and is used as a carrying case for the frame and accessories. The frame is made of steel rods that are strong and weatherproof. Collapses down in to a car-sized package making transporting very easy for camping and festivals. The designer says, “the tent is capable of lifting over 1 ton with ease. The user needs only to run the lightweight pulley chain through their hands to be lifted into the canopies.”

Hidden down a private path filled with lush greenery and trees you will find this cute cottage in Sausalito, California.
Featured on Apartment Therapy and winner of the Teeny Tiny division in the Small Cool Contest, Beth made this small cottage picture-worthy as you will see below.
Imagine being just 20 minutes from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco in this cozy little cottage… Well, that’s home for Beth.
I think it’s such a gem. And she has decorated her cottage in a fun-artistic-bright way.
Beth says, “Being teeny-tiny is never about living small. It’s about making it work.”
As you tour through the cottage below you will see she has managed to bring so much to this small space.
I can not help but love the outdoor ‘Alice in Wonderland’ dining area which you can see below.

It’s not tiny. It’s not micro. But, it’s just right in my opinion. I’m talking about this modern loft apartment I found on Archello.
I really love the modern style of loft apartments. So naturally when I saw this one I knew I must share. Because sharing is caring right?
There is no real story I could find to go with these pictures except that an architect conceptualized this project into what you see below.
They maximized the use of space by having a guest bathroom downstairs, adding storage under the stairs, a soft bed in the living area and sleeping loft with another bathroom upstairs.
I’m not sure on the exact square footage but if I had to guess it would be around 700 sq ft?

When the architects, Specht Harpman, were presented with a project to renovate this 425 sq ft apartment they didn’t realize it would be their most unusual project yet.
The way the apartment was laid out was odd for the amount of space it had. In addition the ceilings went up vertically 25 feet with access to the rooftop terrace.
The four level loft plan brought a solution to this modern micro apartment. It was inventive and creative.
Each loft flowed from one level to the next making the feel of the apartment very open and inviting.
The first level is the entry to the apartment plus the kitchen. Just a few stairs up is the main living area, above the living area would be the sleeping space with a cantilevered bed pavilion.
The final stairs lead up to the garden rooftop terrace. Perfect for a small dog!
Check out the built-in storage on the stairs of the lower level. Looks like plenty of space to store all your necessitates, right?
And don’t forget about the bathroom…it’s located just under the staircase.

Don’t be fooled by the sleekness of the outside because the inside of this modern small home is full of light.
Like a stack of modern lego blocks this small house looks very boxy yet when you go inside all the rooms are very open, bright with plenty of windows and overall just spacious.
It was designed this way so when the entire family is in the house they could all easily spend time together. The living room is the main space and every other room besides the bathroom open up to the living area.
There are many small gardens or terraces that bring in natural light and give the small children extra space to play outside which I like. Also- I’m curious- do you consider a family of four living in 964 square feet ‘living small’?
