Since 1997, Jay Shafer has been wowing the world with his incredible tiny house designs. In 2002 he co-founded the Small House Society with Gregory Johnson.
Last year he split with his original company, Tumbleweed, and founded Four Lights Tiny House Company. “I’m always fidgeting with how to make spaces more efficient,” says Jay. Today he’s working on constantly improving ways to make his tiny houses as flexible as possible so you can adjust the homes to your needs as easily as possible.

Recently Deek visited Ella Jenkins and her Tumbleweed Tiny House.
And while he was there he created a new video that you can watch below.
Ella shares her home with you while she tells you about how she lives happily in her little house on wheels.
She started the project when she was 23 years old and completed it in about one year.
You might also be excited to know that she’s sharing the house with her boyfriend. And they both play instruments which they’re able to keep in the house.

I’m so excited to show you this solar powered modified Tumbleweed Epu tiny house on wheels.
As you can tell it’s been slightly modified. First with the barn style roof, different sized windows, larger front door and open porch.
If you study the Epu plans real quick you’ll notice that the interior was left almost the same. They just changed a few things a little here and there but the layout is basically the same.

If you love tiny houses but seriously question whether you think you’d be able to live in one or not long term renting one is a great way to figure that out.
And although expensive, it costs much less money and time than building one and finding out the hard way that it isn’t right for you.
So for those of you sort of on the fence about it, I highly recommend booking your next vacation in a tiny house and getting some real life experience with one first hand.
Trust me because it might end up saving you months of labor and thousands of dollars. Because what if a small house is better for you than a tiny one? Again, best way to find out, is stay in one for a while and experience it.
Update: Unfortunately, this tiny home is no longer at this location and therefore not available for rent anymore. But you can still enjoy a virtual tour below:
So this is Tumbleweed’s latest tiny house design called the Linden. Plans for it should be available soon but they’re not out yet. I’ll let you know when that happens. Get email updates from me here if you want to. Let me give you the complete tour of the Linden below:

Jay Shafer will be speaking at TEDx about tiny houses this weekend in Sonoma County in Santa Rosa, California.
So if you’re in the North Bay area I thought you should know.
As you probably know Jay wrote Small House Book and created most of Tumbleweed’s tiny house plans that they started out with back in the day.
In addition, he recently started his very own Four Lights Tiny House Company.

Acquiring and preparing a trailer for your future tiny house can be stressful and costly but it’s one of the most important parts of your tiny house if you’re building mobile because it’s your foundation.
For most people, the trailer is actually the single most expensive item that you’ll buy for your tiny home. And rightly so, as it’s going to be the foundation, right?
To address this problem and to make things easier for people like us who want to build tiny cabins that are mobile Tumbleweed Houses is now offering trailers specifically designed and built for stick-built tiny houses (on wheels).
Four Trailer Sizes with Several Design Options
There are four sizes you can pick from and two trailer options right now which are:
- 18′ utility trailer (~$4,200)
- 20′ utility trailer (~$4,500) deck over trailer (~$6,100)
- 24′ utility trailer (~$5,800) deck over trailer (~$6,600)
- 26′ utility trailer (~$6,100) deck over trailer (~$6,900)
You can have your trailer delivered straight to you if you’re in the United States for an additional $500-$1500 depending on where you live. Or you can pick it up for free at one of four locations in the U.S. (listed below).
Then you can also pick four different styles within each size: [continue reading…]

April is a graduate student in English at the University of Oregon.
In this video she’s interviewed on her decision to live in a tiny house on wheels.
Oregon Student Living the Tiny Life
At 19’x8′ the home is just 130-square-feet including the sleeping loft.
It’s got a tiny covered porch and you walk right into the main room. It’s a classic Tumbleweed tiny house design.
Interview: April Anson on Living in a Tiny Home

She says it’s about 114 square feet but I don’t think that includes the loft. It’s 130 including that according to Tumbleweed’s plans.
Using Reclaimed Materials to Build Tiny AND Green
Everything except the studs, shingles, roof and interior walls came from recycled materials.
The flooring came from bleachers from an old gym! Pretty cool, huh?
Welcome to April’s Tumbleweed Tiny House…

You may have already heard the news. Jay Shafer, the founder of The Tumbleweed Tiny House Company, is leaving to start a new business venture. The announcement was made quietly and there isn’t even anything listed on the Tumbleweed Tiny House website at this time.
On October 27th, the Facebook page for Tiny House Design posted the following status update:
“Jay Shafer is leaving the Tumbleweed House Company. That’s the sad news. The good news is that he’s starting up a new endeavor focused more on “social justice via housing rights.” He needs some feedback on a new name… I’ll post a survey next – please vote to help Jay name his new organization.”

Have you met Collin and Joanna before? They’re a young couple who built and lived in their own Tumbleweed Fencl tiny house on a trailer. They bought the plans, ordered the trailer, built the house, and moved in!
But now they’re very happy to announce that they’re starting a family so they will be upsizing to a home that will be better for them to raise a child in. So that means their gorgeous little house is up for sale. The tiny house has sold but you can still see it below!
This is one of the most elegantly designed tiny houses that I’ve seen to date. They used Jay Shafer’s Tumbleweed Fencl building plans to build it and they did an excellent job of decorating as you’ll see in the pictures.
It’s a 130-square-foot design meant to be built onto a 7’x18′ trailer. To date, we’ve featured numerous builds that have used the same plans which you can check out at the bottom of this page.
So yes – the Fencl is definitely a popular tiny home design to build and live in. So, without further adieu, here’s Collin & Joanna’s beautiful self-built tiny home…
