I’m glad to announce that a team of good hearted people in Chico, California have organized the Chico Housing Action Team and their mission is to bring a tiny house village to serve their homeless population.
Right now there’s a growing trend of tiny house villages and communities being created to help the homeless population throughout the United States. I list current communities in this page.
If everything goes as planned for Chico’s first tiny house community it will open Winter 2014. This ‘village’ model has been working successfully in Portland for more than a decade and is now spreading throughout the country to benefit more people in need of truly affordable housing.

Building a Mortgage-free Tiny House by the Seat of My Pants – Part 2 – by Shirley Loomis
Arriving at my tiny house daily was so much more pleasant once the outside was complete. It looked like I was working on something real, no longer just a picture in my mind’s eye. An added benefit of having the exterior complete was that I could work inside with an added degree of warmth and protection from the elements.
Prior to tackling the inside I looked at a lot of layouts I had seen published in books and online, examined my own existing furniture, considering how I might be able to repurpose it for use inside my tiny house. Being a book hound my bookcases were definitely something that would be put to use. As you look at your space, always keep in mind how you live, the kinds of things you like to do, how you make your living, and what you readily have on hand that you can tailor to meet your needs.

If you’ve been looking for a tiny home you can take with you, travel with, and go on adventures with. Then, consider a micro-cabin like this one.
It still retains its cabin-like look and feel. But since it’s smaller, it’s just so much easier to tow and get around with than a larger tiny house. Not only that, but it’s also a lot cheaper to pull, too.
But what Michael, the owner/builder, did here is very creative. He took his older pop up camper and turned it into this amazing DIY micro cabin on wheels. See for yourself in the photos below.

The cabin weighs about 1450 pounds and is about 6′ x 10′. Inside at the peak it’s about 6’6″ tall so you can stand up in it.

If you haven’t seen Jay Shafer’s latest 312 sq. ft. tiny U-house cabin design that’s coming soon (it isn’t officially released yet) then you’ll get to preview it here right now.
This is a much larger tiny house relative to Shafer’s earlier designs that range from 65 to 200 sq. ft. but this one is geared towards the ‘average’ person since not many are cut out to live in 100 square feet.
So this new tiny cabin design has just enough space for all of your modern day needs. It includes a washer and dryer, full kitchen, full bathroom, large refrigerator, full-sized bed, dishwasher, dining space for 6, store space, and even an extra bed for guests

The Weller Tiny House on wheels is one of Jay Shafer’s latest designs since forming his new Four Lights Tiny House company.
And in the recent years, I think he’s made some great improvements to his previous designs most of which are now retired.
But right now I want to get your focus on the 115 sq. ft. Weller tiny home which is about 7′ x 16′ and designed to be built onto a 7′ x 16′ trailer.

Introducing Travis Pyke and his wife Brittany. They are a husband and wife tiny house living couple.
A few years ago they fell in love with simple living and the tiny house movement. They’re in love with the movement because they enjoy creating custom designed micro homes for people since it gives them the ability to enjoy a dream home without the headaches of a mortgage and oversized house.
This means they get to offer tiny housing solutions for people like you and me who prefer to have more time, money and freedom instead of an oversized house filled with stuff. Today Travis and Brittany have completed their tiny dream house of 204 sq. ft. on wheels. They’re calling it the Wind River Bungalow and you can see it below.
Even better, they’ve created a company in Chattanooga, Tennessee called Wind River Custom Homes and they’re willing to build anywhere on site or ship to you a finished tiny home wherever you are.

I just found out about this new tiny housing documentary called Microtopia thanks to Derek Markham at Treehugger and wanted to tell you about.
It’s a documentary with a different style than we’re used to in the tiny house world in my opinion but it focuses on the fact that most of us live in homes that are too big.
In return this often creates financial problems as well as potential environmental and waste issues. So the documentary gives us inspiring stories and micro homes that might be part of the solution.
