This is the story of Kristie Wolfe and how she built her own 230-square-foot tiny cabin in Hawaii in the course of two months for only $11,000! This was after she had built her own 97-square-foot tiny house on wheels in Idaho for just $5,000. But she just couldn’t stop there.

So after a few years, she decided she would buy her own plot of land in Hawaii. She did sight unseen, for $8,000. This would be the location of her second tiny home. Later, she and her mom built the house together using only $11,000 in material cost and two months of labor together. What a cool way to bond, right!

This tiny cabin is 15-ft by 15-ft and sits up on stilts. It’s completely off-grid meaning you even have to rely on rain for water. Don’t worry, she’s got a nice rainwater system set up here. There are even rooftop solar panels for electricity and propane for cooking and heating. Today, the unit is a vacation rental that you can actually book on Airbnb. So what do you think, could you design/build your own tiny house kind of like this?

Vina Lustado of Sol Haus Design built this 140-square-foot off-grid tiny house on wheels and lived in it full-time for nearly a decade in Ojai, California. Built on an 8.5-foot by 20-foot trailer with an 80-square-foot sleeping loft, the home operates completely off-grid using portable solar panels and passive solar design.

The build cost approximately $35,000 and features highly insulated walls, ceilings, and floors for passive heating and cooling. A propane gas fireplace provides supplemental heat, while operable skylights add natural light and ventilation. The signature outdoor deck extends the living space beyond the compact interior.

This $2k tiny home story is a guest post by Winston W. Johnson

Hi Alex (and Tiny House Newsletter readers), I started my tiny shelter in December of 2013, it’s built on a 1965 Yellowstone Cavalier travel trailer frame that I got free from a neighbor.

Probably 75% of the lumber was cut and milled within one mile of where my tiny shelter is located.

A neighbor has a Wood Miser sawmill, two years ago we cut down three 60 ft. tall poplar trees, sawed it into 1″x6″x8′ and 2″x4″x8′ boards and dried them in his solar kiln for 3 months.

By the way, you can see that post here in case you already haven’t which showcases and gives you a tour of Brett’s DIY tiny home on a trailer that he built himself after moving back to his home country.

Team CASITA at Northwestern University designed and built an off-grid tiny house on a trailer as an academic project exploring sustainable, efficient housing. The 128-square-foot structure incorporated solar power, rainwater collection, and carefully selected building materials to demonstrate that small homes can operate independently from utility connections.

Project Overview

The CASITA project aimed to create a fully functional, self-sufficient dwelling using smart design principles. The team addressed the core challenges of off-grid living: generating electricity, collecting and storing water, and maintaining comfortable temperatures year-round.
