LaMar Alexander of Simple Solar Homesteading has been a long-time advocate for off-grid living and affordable tiny house design. Over the years, he has inspired countless builders through his YouTube channel and his own practical cabin builds.

In this post, we’re taking a look back at some of the off-grid tiny house design concepts that have come from his community, as well as a look at his own 8×8 cabin design.

I thought you’d also enjoy this DIY tiny house project. It involves a really inventive man who went from 2000 sq. ft. to a 160 sq. ft. micro home.

The owner/builder has been living in it for more than 5 years now. The micro home is very energy efficient and was very inexpensive to build.

He built it with the help of his brother. They designed and built it all themselves using mostly reclaimed materials.

And by the way, the two vehicles you see above on the right have been converted into electric power.

This is one really interesting/inspiring guy… Not just a tiny house… But DIY electric cars, too.

If the name Vincent Kartheiser doesn’t ring a bell he’s a star actor in the TV series Mad Men.

And what’s interesting about him is that he chooses to live in a 580 sq. ft. tiny cabin in Hollywood with his fiancée.

It was remodeled to look “Japanese-industrial” as he calls it and has a few pretty unique space saving features.

For instance, instead of a murphy bed, his bed simply raises to the ceiling when it’s not being used.

When he wants privacy in the bedroom a large thick red curtain is available to enclose the space in. It’s stored in the built in wooden closet that you can see in the photo above to the left of the bed in the corner of the room. You can also see the railing on the ceiling for the curtain.

The couple that own this caboose micro guest house also own a 800 square foot small house that was originally built in 1902. Since it’s a two bedroom home, and the wife is an artist, they still needed more space for when they have guests over.

So they found this caboose on Craigslist. It’s 7’x10′ so about 70 square feet of space. Eventually they have plans to add a tiny bathroom (or a separate outhouse) along with proper plumbing for water and sewer. Now they’ve got themselves a micro guest house for when they have visitors It’s also a perfect little backyard getaway from the spouse (lol). So how would you use it if it were yours?

I thought you’d like to see this gypsy vardo wagon that’s available for sale right now.

If you’re interested in learning about the history of these historic travel trailers I recommend reading through this page.

This project began around 4 years ago.

It was discovered on eBay but was in need of some TLC because it had been left outside in the sun for about two years.

I always admire conversions like this barn to tiny cottage renovation.

I like them because they make great use of a structure that already exists.

In this case, what used to be a barn is now a beautiful little red cottage.

The best part is, it’s also available as a vacation rental (PS – have you checked out our new tiny house vacations section?) so you can stay in it if you want.

It’s a bed and breakfast in Portland, Oregon.

I’m so glad to add Pepper Clark’s tiny house in the Redwoods to our tiny house vacations section.

It’s always been my belief that before you even start designing and building your own tiny home, you’d be wise to take your next vacation in one first.

This way you can actually determine if you (and yours) actually feel like it’s doable or not long term.

Because the fact is, tiny living isn’t for everybody!

Wanted to show you this awesome treehouse micro cabin that was built with mostly reclaimed materials.

It was done by Derek “DEEK” Diedricksen of RelaxShacks.com, author of Humble Homes, Simple Shacks for one of his clients.

They wanted something for their kid to do homework in, hang out, and eventually so that maybe the parents can turn it into a tiny office.

I’ve seen this tiny house floating around on the Internet but I never knew where it came from.

Today I’m excited to introduce you to the Kingfisher by Jade Craftsman Builders.

It’s an 8′ x 18′ stick built mobile home which totals around 144 sq. ft. inside without including the loft.

It’s designed by Matthew Swett of Taproot Architects and built by JADE Craftsman Builders.
