When his Marine life ended abruptly, Johnny and his wife, Shiang-ling, jumped into converting an amazing school bus into their home-on-wheels. It’s been more than two years now, and the family of six is still enjoying their mobile lifestyle.
As one of 11 kids himself, Johnny took great care to make sure each of his kids has special space for their personal belongings — from a desk with hidden storage, to their own bunks with little fans, movable lights, and under-bed clothing storage.
Shiang-ling is a budding herbalist and studying permaculture, so their bus home has all kinds of room for her tinctures, canning, and cooking. You’ll love the video tour done by Tiny Home Tours, which you can watch below! Follow the family on Instagram.

Janet got in touch to show us her lovely 320 square foot foundation home that was built as an ADU (accessory dwelling unit) on her son’s property in Danville, Kentucky.
Although this tiny home wasn’t Janet’s “Plan A” for a retirement home, it ended up being the best one, she says. Now she lives in her happy L-shaped home just steps from her son and teenage granddaughters. She cooks family meals a couple times a week and yet has her own private space.
Thankfully Danville recently allowed for ADUs, giving Janet this great option for retirement! See pictures of her home and read her story at the end of the post.

Mike is a travel nurse and Katie is a stay-at-home-mom doing online college (she already has a Bachelors’) from their amazing fifth wheel renovation! They went with an older camper to save money, and then spent 6 months gutting it and making it a true home for their family of four. All in all, they spent about $5,000 on the renovation portion.
They have two kids, ages 3 and 2, who share an epic bunkroom over the fifth wheel portion of the RV. While the family first set out thinking they’d move every 3 months, they later decided to spent a year in Florida closer to family in order to have more support. Still, they can take their home anywhere jobs or life take them!
The RV life has allowed them to get close to paying down debt, and they hope to start saving for a homestead. Being on the road allows them to get a feel for just where they might want to settle down. We got to interview Katie about their tiny adventure, so be sure to read that after the photo tour!

This couple was living in London, paying high rent, and running the rat race. So they decided to save up their money and go experience the other cultures of Europe — and find minimalism in the process.
While they miss friends and family — and a proper bathroom — the experience has been fantastic for both Jess and Teddy. They converted a Ford Transit and made it home, complete with a portable toilet and outdoor shower.
We had the chance to ask them questions about their van life, which you can read at the end of the post. Plus, there’s a video tour so you can get all the details! Be sure to follow them on Instagram here.

At 41, Ingrid was working her life away to pay for a mortgage she could hardly afford, and ended up moving in with her mom. But she kept seeing tiny houses and one day decided she’d build her very own — with absolutely no construction experience!
Determined and awesome, she succeeded! Even when suppliers would question her ability to install or build things herself, she did the entire thing in two years by herself, with just a bit of help from friends with some serious heavy lifting. She learned from YouTube and good ole trial-and-error. Just goes to show you that you shouldn’t let others put limits on you.
She shared pictures with us of her DIY build, named “Tiny Tootz” (pronounced like “tootsie”), and talked more about her experience building and going tiny below. Be sure to read her story! Follow her on Facebook here.

The Allagash THOW is one of the most popular tiny house layouts offered by Tiny Homes of Maine. With 240 square feet of living space, the Allagash has plenty of customization options to make it home.
One of the best options? A downstairs bedroom! This space can also act like a living room if you’d rather sleep in one of the two standard upper lofts. You could also remove the loft over the bathroom to allow for extra tall ceilings in the bathroom which look stunning.
Finish materials are up to you, and you can pick things like what kind of toilet and heating system you’d prefer. They have a 2021 slot open for an Allagash build, starting at $76,000. You can get in touch with the builder here.

If 2020 has been a rough financial year for you, it might be time to consider going tiny in an RV! Sara and her family did just that 2 years ago, and it’s helped them go from living paycheck to paycheck on rent, to having spare money in their budget to enjoy life together.
Sara and James live in their RV with their teen daughter Maddy and littles Ezra and Eleanor. Maddy has her own private bunk room, while the younger two have an awesome queen-sized loft to call “home.” It’s a really cool set-up, and works great for a family with kids and a wider age gap.
They live on her parent’s land as they keep saving up for a forever home, but tiny living has proven a blessing despite it’s challenges (like no washer and dryer or dishwasher!). Sara shares their story at the end of the post, so be sure to read that! Follow the family on Instagram here.

Al works as a carpenter and Jessica works in PR, but when they come home at night, it’s to a cozy 55-foot-long narrowboat moored somewhere along the canalways of London.
Their narrowboat lifestyle allows them to live with a lower carbon footprint and get closer to nature, while still living in the city — the best of both worlds! And month-to-month their expenses are less than renting, although big-time expenses do pop up (like, you know, a new engine!).
While they’ve owned “Peace Frog” now for two years, they spent time on land after a fire burnt much of the boat, requiring a full renovation inside. That said, the renovation has made this boat quite gorgeous and homey! Jessica shares her tiny living story at the end of the photo tour, so be sure to read it! You can follow them on Instagram here.

Here’s another family proving you don’t have to live paycheck to paycheck to afford a pricey mortgage on a large home! They downsized from 2,500 square feet and have been living in an RV for two years now. In 2020 alone, they saved $30,000!
Mom Shannon says they won’t live in an RV forever, but it’s allowed them to follow her husband’s military jobs across the country, as well as travel with the family and sightsee all over the United States. They have far more time together, and are learning how to live minimally.
She’s done some beautiful work renovating their RV to make it feel more like their home, and we got to interview her about her tiny life! Be sure to read the Q&A after the photo tour below. And follow the family on Instagram here.
