Today, Samantha and Herb are showing off their 1973 Viscount Caravan conversion — a simple lockdown project that completely changed their lives! Samantha was an interior designer by trade and Herb was a retail manager. Together they renovated 13 homes, but the caravan transformation was the catalyst to get them into tiny living.

Samantha admits she wasn’t a fan after the first few nights she spent sleeping in Hunter, but with time, that changed. Before they knew it, the couple retired early so that they could travel to Australia in the caravan. Since then, they’ve renovated and sold two more caravans and are now in their DIY bus home! But let’s start by checking out their maiden project — a sleek vintage trailer renovation.

Deyana was teaching virtually before it became “a thing” in 2020, so nothing was holding her back from life on the road! She chose a school bus over a van for its affordability and was able to purchase her entire bus home for about $30,000.

It took 11 months for her to complete the renovation, which included a two-part kitchen, a 24×24 shower stall, a couch that converts to a bed, and a fixed bed with a dog nook underneath. She has a security system installed to help her feel safer while driving alone.

Romee & Ruud were indie folk musicians traveling the Netherlands in their amazing green VW bus, but had the desire to put down some roots. So they built a wooden yurt from all kinds of recycled, reclaimed and thrifted materials.

The inside of the yurt is typical studio-style with a loft bedroom and oodles of plants. One of the unique features of this home is that it’s designed to be taken apart and moved if they ever need to relocate — not unlike the Mongolian yurts that started this round home trend centuries ago. What do you think?

Architect Kumiko Ouchi wanted to transform her partner’s 1970s apartment into a truly beautiful and functional space. She did an excellent job hiding anything unsightly while still including the necessary things (kitchen electronics, books, a litter box) in her overall design.

By taking out the walls in the apartment and removing a bedroom, she was able to create an open concept space with a large kitchen that still afforded privacy in the bedroom and bathroom. The hallway doubles as office space, and there are two beautiful balconies for plants.

A double-decker coach bus turned into a full-time home for a family of 8—now that’s something you don’t see every day. This dad was tired of missing out on his kids’ childhoods chasing money to pay for the “good life.” After a family vacation to Utah, he and his wife decided to take his software work remotely and find a way to travel full-time.

So they bought a double-decker coach bus and with the help of a professional company turned it into an incredible home complete with 6 bunk beds, a convertible bed/bedroom for mom and dad, two bathrooms, one shower, a homeschool space, and even a rooftop deck. The two-story layout provides enough room for their large family to live, learn, and travel together.
