About Jalopy Cabins

Jalopy Cabins focuses on building energy-efficient, one-of-a-kind cabins using primarily reclaimed or salvaged materials. Their approach includes using rejected custom orders and other people’s mistakes to create unique structures while minimizing waste and cost.

Lessons from This Salvaged Log Cabin Build

  • Ski Area Cleanup Provides Free Logs: Slope maintenance creates a source for quality timber at no cost
  • Hand-Peeled Logs Add Character: Extra labor produces a distinctive finish worth the effort
  • Rejected Custom Orders Save Money: Windows and materials that didn’t meet someone else’s specs still perform well
  • Salvaged Roofing Works: Older houses provide roofing and rafters suitable for new construction
  • Modern Insulation Improves Efficiency: Combining traditional log construction with high-density foam and radiant insulation creates energy-efficient structures

Love this tiny log cabin! My dream is to one day own a log house on about 8 acres of land. Someday…

I'd want some bars or other security feature to make my Jalopy cabin 100% bear proof. The Ski Hut windows and door would not stand up to a determined bear. Otherwise, they're pretty cute.

It’s amazing how you can take a concept as old as a log cabin and make someone in 2011 say “I really want that”. I think this is a beautiful tiny house.

Hi Steven, you’re doing a great job with your site. I love this cabin too. Cool how you can still bring back something “old”.
