This is the story of Neil and his impressive tiny house project, affectionately named “Cabin McCabinface.”
Located about 40 miles west of Chicago in Northern Illinois, this half-A-frame cabin is a charming escape and testament to creativity and perseverance as it was built over three years on nights and weekends for $5,000 in materials, using Deek’s $35 tiny A-frame plans as a guide. A Labor of Love
Neil’s journey with Cabin McCabinface began with ‘The Dart’ half A-frame plans by Derek “Deek” Diedricksen. Over the course of three years, Neil dedicated his weekends to building this off-grid haven, piece by piece. What makes this cabin even more remarkable is that it was constructed using approximately 50% salvaged, reclaimed, and upcycled materials. This approach not only minimized waste but also kept the project budget-friendly. The total cost? Around $5,000, with $1,000 of that going toward a cozy wood stove.

The Vision Behind the Cabin
While Cabin McCabinface isn’t Neil’s full-time residence, it serves as a backyard getaway where he can unwind and reconnect with nature. The cabin’s design allows it to be dismantled and reassembled, giving Neil the flexibility to move it to a more remote location in the future.
You can build your own “The Dart” cabin with Deek’s easy-to-follow framing plans for $35.00. Available at RelaxShacks.com, these PDF plans are auto-sent upon purchase, so you can print them and start your project immediately. Perfect for a weekend getaway or a cozy tiny home, “The Dart” offers flexibility and affordability.
Sustainable Living in Action
Neil’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop at using reclaimed materials. His future plans for Cabin McCabinface include installing a solar power system, building a compost toilet, adding a rain collection system, and expanding the vegetable garden. Each step brings him closer to a more self-sufficient lifestyle.
