Imagine watching the Northern Lights from the comfort of your bed, surrounded by thermal glass that keeps you warm while offering unobstructed views of the Arctic sky.
That’s exactly what you can experience at Hotel Kakslauttanen in Saariselka, Finland, where 20 glass igloo tiny houses form a unique village designed specifically for aurora viewing.
Igloo Village: 20 Glass-Domed Tiny Houses
Each glass-domed igloo gives guests unobstructed views of the sky from their bed, as long as it doesn’t snow too heavily. The design serves the area’s main attraction: the spectacular Northern Lights.

The hotel attracts tourists from around the world, even on the coldest nights. Open from December to April, guests can enjoy:
- Safaris
- Snowmobile tours
- Ice-fishing trips
- Guided ski treks
The First Thermal Glass Igloo
The first glass igloo was created in 1999 by Jussi Eiramo, owner of the Igloo Village. Since visitors were already coming to the area to see the Northern Lights, he designed a way for them to stay warm while enjoying what they came for.
Thanks to his innovation, tourists can now watch the aurora from the comfort of their bed.
Unique Features
The igloos use thermal glass that heats the interior while melting snow on the outside. Key features include:
- Heat-retaining entry doors
- Privacy curtains (while maintaining sky views)
- Temperature control for Arctic conditions
The property also offers traditional ice igloos and a log cabin restaurant.
The Appeal of Glass Architecture
Houses with extensive glazing allow your body to naturally sync with the environment. When light comes through in the morning, you wake naturally in tune with the world around you. The dome shape adds another dimension to this experience, offering panoramic views unlike typical rectangular structures.
Booking Information
These unique accommodations are in high demand, so booking well in advance is recommended. For current pricing and availability, visit Hotel Kakslauttanen’s website.
