I want to share with you this 226 sq. ft. lake house cabin that’s situated on a narrow island in Loosdrecht Lake in the Netherlands. This island is so small it’s barely wide enough to fit the house!

When building the lake house the architects kept in mind the location which is on a nature preserve. They kept the exterior simple so it would not detract from the surrounding environment. Inside the cabin everything is simple and free of visual clutter.

With different floor levels for the living and dining room you can enjoy unique views of the surrounding area. At night the living area transforms into the sleeping space.

Along one side of the cabin is the built-in service wall. It’s home to the compartmented kitchen, bathroom and storage.

Check out the photos below to explore this unique recreational lake house cabin.

This 600 sq. ft. ‘Bearadise’ Tiny Cabin is a guest post by Karen

I own a beautiful “tiny” cabin, about 600 sq. ft. that is located about 3200 feet above sea level on Phoenix mountain in Warrensville, NC. We’re located on the North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee border about 10 minutes from downtown West Jefferson and 25 minutes from Boone and Blowing Rock.

It started as a small, one room hunting cabin and the person that purchased it before us added a downstairs bedroom and bathroom and a loft. Our water supply is a fresh water spring with a 1400 gallon reserve.

We purchased it for our own private vacation home 8 years ago, but decided to start renting it out about 7 years ago and it has been wildly popular! We book it almost every single day!

The cabin has beautiful mountain and pond views off the deck and is a 3 minute walk to The New River. We are 10 to 45 minutes from all of the local attractions, restaurants, ski slopes, art galleries, shopping, Blueridge Parkway, Tweetsie Railroad, Grandfather Mountain, App. State, Boone, Blowing Rock and much, much more!

Even though Adam and Karen don’t include themselves to be part of the tiny house “movement”, their 280 square foot cabin certainly qualifies it be featured here.

Their goal in building the home was finding the right balance between function, character and cost. Karen and Adam found the property on the way back from a friend’s wedding.

After hiking up the driveway (their car couldn’t make it), and discovering the breathtaking scenery and waterfalls, they made an offer on it 5 days later.

Nestled in the woods this tiny garden cottage is rare in style and design. There is a glass wall on one side of the cottage that is covered with wooden shutters.

During the day these shutters can be opened allowing the beautiful warm sunlight to come inside and then be closed at night for privacy.

The tiny garden cottage was done by architects from Zecc and teamed up with the interior designer, Roel van Norel. Together they made this small space very functional to live in full time.

All the natural sunlight and wood details give this home a cozy feel. About two-thirds of the garden cottage is the living/dining area and kitchen.

Check out all the photos and enjoy!

Steve Gourley is sharing his 8×12 tiny house design with us as part of our 2015 8×12 tiny house design contest. I’ll let Steve explain his design with you.

Dear Alex and Derek,

First let me thanks you both for being a positive force in the Tiny House world. I am currently building a 8×12 Tiny House on a friends lake in the Lynchburg, VA area. I plan on using it as a hunting, fishing, and relaxing spot. I am also using it as a test bed to try out solar, rain collecting, etc. (totally off grid). I plan on building another tiny house to live in one day soon.  I have built most of it with salvaged materials. I am in the process of putting on the metal roof and siding. I am really looking forward to finishing the inside. I have attached a few pictures as well as my floor plan which more than likely will be modified especially after reading and seeing articles on both your websites. Keep up the good work guys.  Again, thanks for the inspirations and the work you do.

I hope it’ll at least slightly amuse you because it’s definitely something you’ve probably never seen before thanks to the creative entrance into the cabin (see below).

This structure was designed and built by students and architects at Bergen School of Architecture. It was done using mostly scrap wood materials from local mills in the area. As you’ll see, this tiny cabin is modern, sleek, and minimalist. Please enjoy, learn more, and re-share below. Thank you!

Wow! A mere $7,000 to build a weekend getaway destination in just two weeks!? Almost unbelievable, and certainly amazing!

Tammy and John built this tiny, 180 square foot tiny cabin (with the help of a friend) to use for weekend trips with their two small children and dog. The cabin itself is obviously very small, but many features make it appear more open, such as translucent corrugated fiberglass panels and an attached deck and yard for the children and dog to play.

The plans John chose to build the cabin were actually inspired by designs for sheds! The costs were kept at a minimum, due to bargain-hunting, homemade curtains and bed linens, and even trash-can diving! I think you’ll agree that the cabin is truly a work of love and partnership!

It’s every little girls/boys dream to have a majestic tree fort right in their backyard. For Lynn Knowlton, she made that dream a reality! Lynn, an Interior Designer, lives just outside of Toronto, Canada. She had always wanted a tree fort of her own and decided one day that she was going to make her wish a reality.

Lynn built the most amazing tree house on her property using 100% recycled materials. Even the wood that was used was taken from her friend’s barn that had been knocked down by a tornado. The windows came from various locations like an old church and old houses.

The tree house comes equipped with a gorgeous porch to relax on, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom and even a big red slide! It’s able to accommodate two adults, and get this….YOU can book it for a night or two if you wish! Lynn rents her beautiful fort out to anybody wishing for a tree house adventure! Talk about exciting! Bookings to stay in Lynn’s tree house can be made on her blog or on Trip Advisor.

This is the story of a man who built his own tiny house for less than $500.

His name is Scott and he calls it his transforming tiny home because it has a custom and very simple fold-out bed. And here’s what’s really interesting. This is the biggest house he’s had in almost 3 years because before this he lived in a dome-tent, and before that, out of a backpack. So for him, the 83 sq. ft. cabin is roomy. Scott and his friends designed and built the simple tiny shelter for less than $500. It’s located on a friend’s 20-acre plot of land. Enjoy the full tour below. Can you imagine building a house for only $500 in materials? Talk about life-changing…
