Cabin Exterior with Cordwood Walls
Interior Writing and Reading Space
The cabin interior serves as a quiet retreat for reading, writing, and contemplation. Built-in bookshelves, a computer workspace, and a coffee maker create a functional creative space surrounded by nature.
Custom Built-In Refrigerator
A creative solution for keeping beverages cool, this custom refrigerator is built into the exterior wall, accessible from outside the cabin. The natural materials and rustic aesthetic blend seamlessly with the cordwood construction.
Companion Outhouse: The Wee Wee House
The matching outhouse, playfully named “The Wee Wee House,” uses the same cordwood construction technique as the main cabin. This companion structure allows the retreat to function independently without indoor plumbing.
About Cordwood Construction
Cordwood construction (also called stackwall or stovewood) uses short logs laid perpendicular to the wall face, with mortar between them. This technique creates excellent insulation, uses low-cost materials, and produces a distinctive aesthetic. Adding glass bottles to the walls brings natural light through the thick walls while creating colorful light patterns inside.
Lessons from This Cordwood Cabin Build
- Recycled Materials Reduce Costs: Using reclaimed wood and found materials keeps building expenses low while adding character
- Cordwood Construction Suits DIY Builders: The technique requires minimal specialized skills and uses readily available materials
- Companion Structures Extend Function: A separate outhouse allows the main cabin to remain simple without plumbing systems
- Large Windows Connect to Nature: Generous glazing and screen doors bring the outdoors in while maintaining weather protection
- Purpose-Built Retreats Need Less Space: A dedicated reading and writing cabin requires only essentials—no bedroom or full kitchen needed
