‘From Tiny House to Little House’ is a guest post by Jane Dwinell
After living and traveling in our Tiny House for a year, we decided it was time to settle down. We missed gardening, and wanted the community you can build by staying in one place. We looked for property and found what we wanted in Vermont on the shores of Lake Champlain.
Unfortunately, the Tiny House was not built to withstand a Vermont winter. And, to be honest, we wanted more space…. not much more, but more. If we had known we were going to stay put in a Tiny House, we would have designed and built it differently. We would have gone to the tallest height we could have legally (instead of two feet lower for ease of going down the road), and had a sleeping loft. That would have given us more floor space in the living area, and greater storage options. We would have added more insulation, and been less concerned about weight.

This 950 sq. ft. small house was designed for a family by Rusafova Markulis Architects.
It’s called The Blue House and was created specifically for their clients needs.
Since the home is inspired by Japanese aesthetics it has a simple and elegant design, look, and feel.
It was completed in June of 2013 and photographed by Jennifer Coates.

This is a Reader Submitted Guest Post – Share Your Small House Story Too
Hi Alex,
My partner and I bought this small house as a second home in early 2012, as a retreat from our lives in the “biggish” city of Durham, NC.
The house, located in Blowing Rock, NC (just 3 hours from our primary home) was built as part of a “future” 21 unit vacation rental community.

Two weeks ago, I wrote about the LumenHaus, a small, energy-efficient tiny house prototype by Virginia Tech. With its very high-tech features, it’s a neat example, but its $450-650,000 price tag puts it out of the reach of most of us.
But another university group has been focusing on designing small houses with a much, much lower price tag. That’s the Rural Studio at Auburn University.
The Rural Studio is a long-running design-build program that does most of its work in rural Hale County, Alabama. The Rural Studio’s 20K House project has produced a series of houses, twelve so far, so named because they’re designed to be built for $20,000. While some have met this budget and others haven’t, they are all interesting examples of simple but well-designed dwellings.
Take, for example, the Roundwood House. Its designers wanted to explore building applications for “thinnings”, small-diameter timbers that are removed to encourage forest health but are too small to be milled into conventional lumber.

This is the story of an INCREDIBLE 500-square-foot little house on a CLIFFTOP with WATER VIEWS in Chile! And it gets even better…
Because according to The Tiny Life, it was built in only 3 months and for only $15,000 USD. The home is designed just the way I would want my own home, with a covered patio separating two portions of the house.
In this case, one end of the house is the bed and bath, while the other side is the living space and kitchen. If you work from home and have a family, this kind of design would be absolutely PERFECT, don’t you think?

This is the story of the Quietude Prefab Cabin. It’s the story of Denise Franklin and her healing place. After going through a major illness and doctors telling her she only had six months left to live… It’s been more than twenty years, she had left her house, and husband, and was now in search of her sacred space.
With a budget of only $28,000, she thought it might sound impossible, but she knew that anything is possible if you believe in it enough, so she didn’t give up and eventually made it happen thanks to the help of the wonderful and amazing Henry Yorke Mann (architect). Denise ended up with her dream tiny home… 280-square-feet of peaceful bliss. Please enjoy…?

This article will show you how one couple built their very own mortgage-free small house for $5,900 and how you might be able to do the same using reclaimed materials that are inexpensive and many times completely free. All it takes is your dedication and labor. I’m handing it over to Deputy Gene now. Thank you for reading. – Alex
My wife and I decided to build a small house as cheaply as we could as a weekend getaway. We had a relative who worked at a lumber supply house and would call us whenever they had seconds on sale. We purchased anything they had figuring we would need it eventually. We worked every weekend I had off and it took us a little over a year to finish. Here it is about four weekends into the project.

Meet Brendon and Akua who built a 500-square-foot small house in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The home was designed and constructed with the help of Smallworks Studios / Laneway Housing in Vancouver.
A while back we featured Paula and Skip’s 500-square-foot home from Smallworks Studios which you may also like. Brendon and Akua went with Laneway’s West Coast Loft model which features a loft bedroom, luxurious kitchen, living area with balcony, and a garage. They built it in Brendon’s parent’s backyard so they didn’t have to buy additional land. Since it has a flat roof you can easily add solar panels or even a living roof.
