In this post I’m introducing you to Jay Austin and his ‘Matchbox’ tiny home on wheels in Washington, D.C.’s Boneyard Studios.

According to the video, more than 1000 people decide to move into the area every single month therefore driving the cost of housing up and increasing construction in the area.

And even though they’re building as fast as they can, they still can’t keep up with the demand for housing in the area. So where do tiny houses stand?

Meet Jay Austin and His 140 Sq. Ft. Tiny Home

To have a park model tiny house / log cabin on your own land somewhere does sound pretty awesome.

This particular model is only available in Idaho, Montana, Northern California, Oregon, Washington, Alberta, and British Columbia.

Check out the Pacific Lodge built and manufactured by Palm Harbor Homes.

It is a 386 square feet wooden cabin with one bedroom/one bath and a sleeping loft.

The dimensions are: 34 x 11’2. It’s classified as a park model home.

Maybe some of us should consider designing and building our tiny houses to park model specs if we want more space and a downstairs bedroom?

Wanted to show you Yahini Homes‘ latest tiny house on wheels.

It’s called the Butterfly cabin. A few months ago I showed you their 8’x14′ folding porch tiny house.

Weighs 5100 lbs, has a built in porch, and is stick-built using glued and screwed 2 x 4 framing.

Total width including the gutters (yes, it has gutters!) is 8’6″ so it’s legal to tow without any special permits.

Road height is just 12′ so you’re good there, too (for towing).

Total length including the trailer tongue is 21′.

Wanted to show you this tiny house for sale in Payson, Utah.

It’s listed on eBay right now and was built using Tumbleweed plans from November 2010.

The little house was built on an 8’x18′ flatbed trailer.

It has electric, water and sewer hook ups just like an RV.

This tiny cabin on wheels even has a bathroom with RV style flush toilet and shower too.

The upstairs loft has a skylight, there’s a tiny built in porch, and two closets inside.

You might have already learned about the Tiny House Hotel in Laura’s recent post.

I’ve even featured a few of their tiny houses recently including the Miter Box.

The best part is that you (and anyone else) can stay in these awesome little homes.

Almost two years ago I blogged about giant sewage tubes being turned into a tiny house hotel in Mexico.

Today, so far, we’ve got three stick built tiny houses on trailers in Portland, Oregon as the country’s first official “Tiny House Hotel.”

And I’ll bet there’s more in the works. But anyways, let me introduce you to the owners and creators of this magnificent place.

Hank is an architect student who bought a bus for his final project.

He was tired of doing projects that weren’t real. They were just on paper.

Hank’s grandfather owns an 80-acre parcel of land in Wisconsin where they wanted to build a tiny cabin on the land.

But because of building codes and zoning regulations in the area they were only allowed to build a cabin so small.

So for the last few years, they’ve been discussing the idea of buying a bus and turning it into a cabin to use while on the property.

I wanted to show you this 165 square foot tiny house on a trailer that was built using slightly modified Tumbleweed Fencl plans. It has that rustic look to it that I personally love and the pictures below speak for themselves.

The interior is beautiful and features high quality home style cabinetry with a spacious kitchen/bathroom for such a tiny home. A design like this is perfect for those of you who prefer that your tiny house feels like a home over the futuristic overly-modern style like this.

At first glance, it’s like every other tiny home that you see on a trailer. Then you realize it’s designed to fold out and expand into a full 420 square feet by the owner, designer and builder Nick.

Cai House ™ is a start-up company in Fletcher, Vermont. The home is two stories, wood frame, and yes it’s on wheels. On his blog, he describes it as, “a super-insulated RV disguised as a cabin or cottage.”

I think the builder would be interesting to talk to. 1. What would you ask him? 2. Would you buy or build this house? Let’s talk about it in the comments. He spent about $50,000 building it. If you want to learn more about Nick Hurt (designer/builder) you can jump over to his blog where he gives you more details about the house. His son created a great video of how the house works. Like how it folds out and expands into a 420 square foot cabin! You can watch the video at the bottom of this post.
