In this post I’m introducing you to Esther and Kenny who are a young couple who have designed, built, and now live simply in their 170 sq. ft. tiny home.
I was lucky enough to have the chance to interview them and they were nice enough to share their thoughts and experiences with all of us here at Tiny House Talk.
For me it’s always exciting when anybody decides to take charge with a small space. And it especially makes me happy to see young people doing it because I know how helpful it can be for them later on.

That’s right, “couple builds tiny home to live in their Portland backyard while they rent out their main house for income.”
Mike and Laura were recently featured in the Sustainable Business Oregon by the Portland Business Journal.
They’re a couple who have built a 160 square feet tiny house on a utility trailer to avoid zoning restrictions on tiny housing.
According to the article they use the micro home to supplement their income. But here’s the twist.
They’re moving into the tiny house and renting out there big house to live simply.

I just had to show you Tim and Hannah’s off-the-grid 196 sq. ft. micro cabin.
They built it themselves completely in Tahoe, California and have been living in it for almost two years.
The couple started off with 20 acres and absolutely no blueprints.
But I’m sure they had tons of ideas that they had gathered online while dreaming about the project years before.
So here’s what they came up with… And it was all completely DIY with the intention of creating a space for living simply.

This couple began creating ideas for their future “perfect” home early in their marriage.
They wanted a home that was big enough for just the two of them (and their dogs).
This way they’d have more time and money for their personal interests.

Shaye and Tom are a young couple who decided to design and build their own tiny house in West Auckland, New Zealand. It measures 7.2 meters long by 2.4 meters wide which translates to approximately 24′ x 8′. Or a total of 15 square meters (or 161 square feet).
They’ve only been living in it for two weeks as of the filming of the video tour and interview you can watch below thanks to the folks at Living Big in a Tiny House. What’s really inspiring is that the couple had never built anything like this before. They were able to learn most of what they needed by watching videos on the Internet.
What might be even more inspiring is that they’re only going to spend a total of about $20,000 to build it themselves. And that’s all with very high-quality materials used for the build.

Meet Alek, Anjali and Anya.
They’re a young couple with a little dog.
And they’ve been building they own mortgage-free tiny home on a 8×20 trailer.
It was designed in SketchUp and every little bit of the process has been documented on their blog.
The tiny house has everything you’d need, including:
- Kitchen
- Bathroom with shower
- Hot water
- Kitchen
- Washer/Dryer
And much more! Best of all the house is mortgage-free.

How would your life be with no mortgage, no car, and a teeny tiny house to call home? When I first heard about Tammy Strobel and her husband Logan they were living simply in a minimalist apartment. Today they are living in their own mortgage-free tiny house on wheels designed and built by PAD Tiny Houses.
But why? Around six years ago Tammy was dissatisfied with her life because she was commuting for two hours every day just to go to a job that she didn’t even like. They were $30k in debt, owned two cars, and were living in a two-bedroom apartment. So Logan suggested they downsize.
