This is the story of a couple who are living in a 1978 Airstream Tiny Home. When they got tired of living paycheck to paycheck, they decided to make a big change.

So George and Melanie decided that they would live in an Airstream travel trailer to pursue their dreams of a simple life and the opportunity for George to pursue his career in art. After doing some research, they found an Airstream on Craigslist and bought it for $5,000. And with a budget of about $1,500, they fixed it up to suit their needs.

This is the story of a man who renovated his 70s Airstream into an awesome tiny home on wheels that he now lives in with his daughter.

It’s a 1976 Airstream Ambassador. It measures 30′ from the rear to the hitch and offers about 28′ of space inside. From the outside, it still looks like a classic Airstream travel trailer. When you go inside, you’ll find a unique living area with a kitchen, daybed, dining table that converts into a bed, a bathroom, and plenty of storage throughout.

This 1969 Airstream is a guest cabin conversion that was renovated by the current owner.

Right now it’s in Austin, Texas. The current owner was using it on his property as a rental.

Unfortunately, the city determined that it is not allowable to be used as a rental on the current property, so that’s why it’s for sale right now.

The asking price was $22,000 USD. Last year alone, according to the Craigslist ad (expired), he was able to earn more than $25,000 in rental income from it. And so far this year, he’s already up to $8,000 in rental income. It’s too bad the city is forcing him to stop, isn’t it?

But it can be a great opportunity for someone to buy it who has the money. It seems like it’s ready to move into and use just like you would a custom built tiny house. For around $22k, that seems like a pretty fair deal to me! (Update: sold!)

Did you know that Matthew McConaughey, the famous actor, also enjoys small spaces? According to an article and interview with him in 2008 on Architectural Digest, he used to live out of a GMC van at least occasionally in 1996 which turned out to be too small for him. More recently, in 2004, McConaughey got himself a 2004 Airstream International CCD 28. He named his Airstream the Canoe.1

If you’re wondering where he keeps his Airstream it’s in an RV park in Malibu, California right on a prime surfing spot in the area. And so far, according to this article on Architectural Digest, McConaughey has used it for living out of, as an office, taking it on road trips, and more.1

The actor also mentions another thing you might enjoy about the beauty of small spaces in the article. McConaughey says, “the thing about small spaces is that they’re relaxing. You’re limited in your options.”3
