If like me you’ve been wanting to see more tiny house communities come to life you’ll probably really enjoy this post (and the videos below).
Because projects like this can serve as a model for any of us to follow or at least learn from to create more tiny living micro communities around the world.
I like the idea of independent ‘micro’ communities created by relatively small groups of people who exchange labor with each other to keep building costs low.
But if you wanted (or the group wanted) the land could also eventually serve as a learning center, farm, sustainable living learning center, etc.
I encourage you to learn how a group of friends and fellow carpenters built this micro community using very little money and their own labor in a fairy tale forest setting in France:
This 400 sq. ft. solar off-grid small house design was submitted as part of LaMar’s off grid tiny house design contest where you can win up to $500 for submitting your own design.
But this 16′ x 25′ small home is designed to be a spacious, space saving, creative tiny home that’s fun to live in and share with others if you wanted to.
There will be solar roof mounted hot water heater, a unique upstairs deck/balcony, large kitchen, solar panels, and so much more.
I’m excited about building up a list of up and coming as well as current tiny house communities and in this post I’m introducing you to the 333 acre Sacred Mountain Sanctuary Eco Village which is in Candler, North Carolina.
It’s near Asheville (about 25 minute drive away) and it is a new permaculture eco village that is still being developed. Right now it’s possible to arrange a visit, stay in a cabin, and learn about permaculture.

After serving as CEO of Virgin America most people would think you’d find Fred Reid in a large luxurious home. But that’s not him. Instead he’s kept his small home and built a tiny cabin as a backyard office as well as an elevated treehouse cabin up in the trees.
I had to share this amazing video, interview and guided tour with you where you get to see his homestead in Sonoma County. This is where his small house, backyard micro cabin, and elevated treehouse are at. And one of the best parts is that his land is located in a Redwoods forest.

I thought you’d enjoy this story of a couple who’s living tiny in their 6′ x 9′ micro camper which happens to be a 1987 teardrop-like travel trailer.
But they have plans on upsizing into a more spacious 8′ x 20′ custom built tiny house on wheels. But for now, they’re content in their teardrop micro home.
