This 425 sq. ft. micro apartment in Manhattan has been wonderfully renovated called the MicroLoft. Back in the 1990s it was purchased for about $95,000.
Years later it was renovated for a cost of $400,000 for a client to make every square inch inside count and I’m showing you here so you can get an idea of what you can really do with a small amount of space. And, of course, we can implement the same ideas in here ourselves (if you’re a DIY person) and not pay any where nearly as much money.
Louise Harpman, founding partner of Specht Harpman, says that the demand for small spaces right now is huge and it continues to grow in many areas across the country. She also talks about other designs like the ZeroHouse that they are developing and offering.

This 700 sq. ft. double-studio apartment in Barcelona is like nothing you have ever seen before because it’s designed to be shared by strangers if you wanted to. In fact, even two couples would be able to use the space. That’s the potential for 4 people in a 700 sq. ft. space. That’s one 700 sq. ft. apartment with two studios inside. The design has been created by Studio P10 and Miel Arquitectos.
It’s done by creating communal areas that consist of the entrance, dining, and kitchen in addition to private areas that can be opened or closed for privacy. In summary, there’s a communal kitchen. Then there are two studios with their own separate (and private) bathrooms.
I can see how designs like this can be used in big cities and even in university areas so that people can split the cost of housing while also getting to share resources with each other. What do you think? Can you see arrangements like this working? If so, for who? Would it work for you? Either way, please enjoy and re-share below. Thank you!

In this case Kanga Room Systems built this 14×14 studio cottage for a client who wanted craft space plus an area for their grandkids to play in while they’re over.
I can easily see how this tiny cabin can be turned into a tiny home though and that’s why I’m sharing it with you right now. Although tiny shelters can be used in many ways (like a studio, playhouse, office, or tiny guest room), I can’t help but think of how you can turn it into a space for full time simple living. In this case we would need a kitchenette, tiny bathroom, and probably an upstairs sleeping loft to make this tiny cottage a home.
How would you make this 14×14 tiny shelter your own? Please enjoy, re-share, and tell us your best thoughts in the comments below. Thank you!

This 960 sq. ft. cozy beach cottage was built in 1978 on a .25 acre lot located in Kennebunk, ME.
Inside you’ll find three bedrooms and one bathroom. The best part is that you have views of the beach from inside and you’re just steps from the sand.
This property is actually for sale with an asking price of $1.3 million (ouch!). But really I just wanted to show you the little cottage because I think it’s a great small house design for a family to live simply in. What do you think?

This 640 sq. ft. 1-bedroom houseboat is in Seattle, Washington’s Lake Union community.
It was built back in 1920, according to Small House Bliss. Since that time it has been added onto which has made it less tiny. Inside you’ll find an office, bedroom, living area, kitchen, and more.
This floating home was listed for sale with an asking price of $670K (ouch!) but was actually sold for $490,000 (still an ouch!) according to Estately. If it were more affordable, how would you like to live in a floating cottage like this one right on the water? Please enjoy and re-share below. Thank you!

This 160 sq. ft. tiny cottage with a loft is absolutely beautiful, isn’t it? This tiny house is located on a farm south of Stockholm. It’s there for guests (there’s a larger home on the property too).
For me, there’s something even more special about tiny houses without wheels. It’s just so classic and simple. I love it. How about you? I like the covered front door and I also really like the colors they used (red, white, teal, and black). It’s just awesome, isn’t it?
When you go inside you’ll find open living space, a tiny kitchen, and an upstairs sleeping loft. That’s about it! There’s no bathroom inside because there’s a wonderful separate bathhouse with dual showers. That’s where your washer/dryer is located, also. What do you think of this setup? Would it work for you?

This 700 sq. ft. tiny cottage is located in Plymouth, NH and is used as a vacation rental by the owners. You can actually book a night in it yourself if you want to using Airbnb.
Inside you’ll find a little kitchen, living room, two loft bedrooms, and a bathroom. Outside there’s a beautiful porch and you’re surrounded by gardens. Plus it says it’s located where you can walk to town. Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it?
Can you imagine yourself living in a little house like this one? I think 700 sq. ft. is a really good size because it’s still small and easy to manage but you still get enough space for whatever it is you might like. In this video based post you’ll get to see how a family of five lives in an 850 sq. ft. small house that’s 100 years old. And if you do the division, that’s only 170 sq. ft. per person. So if you really wanted to, you can say that they’re living tiny, right?
But it’s really more of a ‘normal’ small house with fenced in yard (which is great!). They even bought a shed that they’ll later on be turning into a tiny house to use as a guest house later on. You can get the full story from Talya Rose in the video below so you can learn how and why they’re living in this little home as a growing family.
I think they made a great decision for their life long-term because it seems like this house will work well for them for many years to come if not for the rest of their lives. What do you think about families and tiny houses? In your opinion, should they go tiny or go small instead? Please share your best thoughts in the comments below. Thank you.
