Video: Tiny House Build Timelapse

This timelapse compiles hundreds of video clips recorded over 14 months of weekend construction, showing a 204 square foot tiny house built from the ground up.

Uses for a Backyard Tiny Structure

  • Home Office: Dedicated workspace separate from household distractions
  • Creative Studio: Art studio, music room, or craft workshop
  • Guest House: Private accommodations for visitors
  • Meditation Space: Quiet retreat for yoga or mindfulness practice
  • Storage Shed: Organized storage that looks better than a standard shed

Design Details

  • Type: Tiny house / backyard office structure
  • Size: Typically 100-200 sq ft for permit-free construction in many areas
  • Foundation: Pier blocks, concrete slab, or trailer (for mobility)
  • Framing: Standard stick framing or advanced techniques with 2×3 studs
  • Insulation: Essential for year-round office use
  • Electrical: Sub-panel from main house for lighting and outlets
  • Best For: Remote workers, creatives, anyone needing dedicated workspace

Lessons from Building a Tiny Office

  • Weekend Building Is Achievable: Working paycheck to paycheck, weekend to weekend produces results over time
  • Video Documentation Helps Learning: Recording your build creates reference material and captures progress
  • Under 200 Sq Ft Often Avoids Permits: Many jurisdictions exempt small structures from building permit requirements
  • Separation Improves Productivity: A dedicated office away from the house creates mental boundaries between work and home
  • Multi-Use Design Adds Value: Structures that can serve as office, studio, or guest space justify the investment

Fairly good. They’ll have some trouble with settling in the near future though, never dig in unless you absolutely have to with a skidded building. Spent several years building portables (on skids and blocks) on customer sites, don’t disturb the ground unless other issues force it.
