Andrea sent me this great post today from TreeHugger where they featured a few incredible examples of multifunctional furniture inside small apartments.
If you had a set up like this your bed would be up on a loft with a completely enclosed underneath closet (yes, below the bed).
You’d have a tiny spiral staircase that leads up to the platform that holds your office and bookshelves. Underneath?
More storage that’s completely hidden! Another example goes on to show you how two people can share one room while still having “their own space”.
I can show you one picture but you’ll have to see below for the links to see the others.
You probably haven’t seen a hideaway bed exactly like this one before.
It’s a little different than your average murphy bed because of the way it works. One touch of a button on the remote and 35 seconds later you have a bedroom.
The unique feature is that you don’t physically have to fold your bed out although you will need to grab some sheets and a pillow!
But seriously the bed is perfectly hidden in the bookcase unit. And it slides out in a very unique way… You’ve got to see:
Watch the video below.
In the video below you can see exactly how it works.

When you’re living in a small house, space can be an issue. Especially when it’s you and your family but even if you’re single and living in a studio or even a tiny house.
So as part of our small space furniture series I feature ideas every week that you might be able to use or get inspiration from.
Sometimes it’s easy enough where you can just place the order.
So today you’re looking at a bed that offers a lot. It’s a multifunctional piece of furniture that’s perfect for a small space. And it serves you with a bed loft, desk, plenty of storage, and lots of shelving.
Some other cool features you’ll enjoy with it are the way the desk pulls out and hides away when you’re not using it. There are also a bunch of drawers for completely hidden storage along with shelves in every other spot. It also comes with a small ladder so you can easily climb up to bed.
In the picture below, all storage is closed and the desk is hidden/put away.
In the next picture the desk is pulled out and the side shelves are open, have a look…
If you want to see a normal example of a tiny house along with small space furniture designs, you’re going to enjoy this post! Read on…
By normal I mean that the home isn’t built on a trailer and instead is apart of an ordinary neighborhood. I think it’s one of those houses that have been grandfathered in with the building codes.
Dirk, the homeowner, has been living in this 250 square foot house since 1999. Since then it’s inspired him to simplify his life and design solutions for storage. On his web site, you can see the transformation that the house has gone through since. He’s added a garage, fencing, and new landscape.
Now he is thinking of adding a second story to the home. Don’t worry, it will still be small after this project (around 500 square feet) but maybe not tiny. I don’t know about you but I am looking forward to checking out his progress. I like the idea of that balcony up there!
You’ll find his designs simple, planned, and smart. His furniture will give you some ideas that you might be able to put to use yourself, like his vertical storage on wheels that are perfect for a multifunctional room. You can see a photo of it at the bottom of this post.
It’s been a while since the last small space furniture post, so here’s #14. A collection of convertible / multifunctional furniture that will proudly double or triple serve your tiny house.
When furniture doubles its use as something it makes a big impact on the functionality of the house. Most importantly, it just saves space!
The first video below is a sofa that quite amazingly converts into a bunk bed in just a few seconds.
After that you’ll find a twin bed that also serves as a desk with storage. The best part is, no need to take things off the desk to go to sleep.
This hideaway bed is the ultimate in small space furniture. When being used for sleeping it floats in the middle of the room.
During the day it hides away easily within the roof and actually makes the ceiling look beautiful with paneling and lighting. This one lifts and hides away electronically.
No need to make the bed. Â I hope it has a weight sensor on it or something to prevent a prankster in the house from pressing the hideaway button while someone’s sleeping.
This is a great feature for a studios and small apartments. I’m not sure it would work for most tiny houses because of the roof styles–a Murphy bed is probably a better option for these.
