Hi Alex and Tiny House Newsletter readers, I’ve recently completed (and sold) a 20′ shipping container conversion.
I did it all almost on my own with the exception of electric and plumbing, working out of a storage unit and wanted to share it with you.
It’s just under 160 sq. ft. and has a full kitchen, bathroom with toilet and shower, flat screen TV, and more.

Just for fun I thought you might like this 64 sq. ft. micro cabin that is actually used as a sauna.
Yes, a sauna, but in Finland and other places in Europe having a sauna outside is a social thing.
The architects designed it for a client who wanted it during the winter months because it’s great after a sweaty run or after jumping in icy cold lake water. Plus it’s small enough that it can be moved on a sledge.
I’m thinking this would make a great private space for reading/writing/meditation? But if designed right, this micro cabin could even make the perfect tiny living space. Let’s take a look.

Don’t be fooled by the sleekness of the outside because the inside of this modern small home is full of light.
Like a stack of modern lego blocks this small house looks very boxy yet when you go inside all the rooms are very open, bright with plenty of windows and overall just spacious.
It was designed this way so when the entire family is in the house they could all easily spend time together. The living room is the main space and every other room besides the bathroom open up to the living area.
There are many small gardens or terraces that bring in natural light and give the small children extra space to play outside which I like. Also- I’m curious- do you consider a family of four living in 964 square feet ‘living small’?

This 160 sq. ft. Rhino shipping container tiny home named ‘Zulu Queen‘ has been created by an architect/artist and an outdoors woman who loves traveling. Together they created a company called Rhino Cubed.
And it combines tiny living, sustainability, and art. Rhino Cubed is based in Boulder, Colorado and the company is building units nearby in Louisville. It all starts with a reclaimed 20′ or 25′ shipping container. From there it’s turned into a sustainable tiny home to live simply in.
Options include full kitchen, bathroom, solar power system, artsy bunk bed, water storage, and more. Would you consider converting a used container into your own DIY tiny home? I would.

I thought you, like me, would also enjoy this 387 sq. ft. (36 sqm) modern stacked shipping container.
Designed by Tomokazu Hayakawa Architects in Torigoe, Taitō, Tokyo, Japan. Engineering was done by Ejiri Structural Engineers and construction by C3 design.
Although this is not a tiny home or even a small home it’s actually designed to be a small office and gallery in this old downtown area. Either way I thought it was so cool that I should share it with you.

I thought you might also like this hand-built rustic modern tiny house in Portland, Oregon.
It’s a backyard tiny home that was hand built by the homeowners (and their friends) on the property.
Best of all- they used mostly reclaimed and recycled materials to build and furnish the cabin. This not only keeps construction costs low, but it’s obviously amazing for the environment.
When you walk inside you’ll immediately notice the living room, kitchen, and ladder that takes you to the upstairs sleeping loft bedroom with a queen bed. And yes there’s a bathroom downstairs too.

Even though this isn’t a tiny house I still thought you’d enjoy this 840 sq. ft. modern and rustic cabin in the redwoods.
And the best part is that this particular one was designed and built in a way that makes it feel modern and rustic at the same time. But not only that… The exterior of the structure looks like a cabin. When you go inside though you’ll notice a cottage-like homey look and feel in certain rooms. So the result is a modern rustic cottage cabin, isn’t it? Oh, and good news- plans are available for this design if you like it enough to build it.

From the outside, it looks like a classic tiny stone cabin.
At 350 sq. ft. it’s tiny to some, small to others, and spacious for few.
When you step inside you unexpectedly feel like you’re in a modern, woodsy, and yet rustic micro cabin all at the same time.
I encourage you to enjoy the tour of this modern/classic tiny stone cabin below so you can see what I mean. And let me know your opinion on it in the comments below.
