Right now I want to share this micro cabin with you that’s suitable for all types of weather. Architect, Mats Theselius designed this Henry David Thoreau inspired micro cabin for Arvesund. They call it The Hermit’s Cabin.
As Thoreau once said, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life.”
With only 81 square feet to live in I believe you could truly embrace what Thoreau is saying here. Live deliberately with only the essentials of life.
This humble space is big enough for a peaceful getaway in the woods or used as a shed, writing cabin, backyard office or sauna.

This is a yurt-like micro cabin with a studio layout in the Portland, Oregon area. It’s really more like a Thoreau-cabin because it’s basically a bedroom with a desk. In other words, there’s no kitchen and bath but if you stay here you do get access to a private bathroom in the main house.
Plus you can also use the kitchen in the main house but you have to share it with the owners (and it’s a vegan only kitchen). So take a look at it below and let me know what you think. I don’t think it would be very hard to do an add-on kitchen and bath. You could also just use another structure for that and connect it all via deck.

This tiny cabin in the woods story is a guest post by Joe Slade
I am in the process of building this tiny cabin in the woods in Attala County, Mississippi.
It sits in the middle of 22 acres of hardwoods with no roads on the property.
All building supplies are carried in by hand. I just finished painting it to protect it for years to come.

It’s hand built with a cedar body, onboard marine battery, two windows, side door with lock, working lights, and canvas awning on a single axle trailer.
In total it has less than 1,000 miles on it according to the listing and measures 5′ wide, 9′ long, and 6′ high. Inside it’s about 4′ high and weighs approximately 750 lbs.

Guest Post – How I Built the Cutest DIY Cargo Trailer (aka Micro Cabin) Ever
This project was done as a way to quickly and inexpensively enclose my 6’x10′ utility trailer to protect my cargo during transport to the Blue Ridge Mountains where I would start building my own tiny cabin. So I figured, “why not make it cute and practical at the same time?” I bought the trailer new and then built the enclosure around it for about $400 in materials and about a month of labor on my spare time.
I built it on the fly with no plans since it was only intended to keep the rain off my stuff and allow me to lock it up at night. If I hadn’t used reclaimed materials for much of it, I could have finished it a lot faster. But because I used reclaimed materials it took a lot of creative manipulation to make it all work.

Just for fun I thought you might like this 64 sq. ft. micro cabin that is actually used as a sauna.
Yes, a sauna, but in Finland and other places in Europe having a sauna outside is a social thing.
The architects designed it for a client who wanted it during the winter months because it’s great after a sweaty run or after jumping in icy cold lake water. Plus it’s small enough that it can be moved on a sledge.
I’m thinking this would make a great private space for reading/writing/meditation? But if designed right, this micro cabin could even make the perfect tiny living space. Let’s take a look.

Deek just emailed me about this micro cabin ‘study pod’ that he just finished for an NYU professor who plans on using it in his property in New Jersey so I wanted to share it with you here.
It’s a peaceful place where he can grade papers and read. And it completely opens up to nature. On top of that, Deek used recycled materials that he saved from other projects over the years on the back wall that you can see in the photo below.
And the flooring was reclaimed from a 100-year-old home! The roof is built using polycarbonate roofing called Tuftex. The micro cabin on wheels is just 4’6″ x 7′ and about 5’6″ tall.

It’s custom built and surrounded by mango and hau trees. It’s also angled just right so that you can enjoy the cool trade winds.
Staying here starts at just $75/night. Not too bad for Hawaii, right? And yet another great way to try out tiny living.

Have you seen Derek “DEEK” Diedricksen’s 8′ x 8′ x 8′ 64-square-foot tiny house slash micro cabin? It’s made mostly out of plywood and if you’ve read his book, Humble Homes, Simple Shacks, you’ve seen pictures of it already.
They built it in Brooklyn, New York inside the old warehouse workshop you can see below. It was a prefab design done by Derek. It took him two days to create the prefab kit and 5 hours to put it together with 3 people. There are all sorts of cool designs inside and out include a pop up window, lantern and a voodoo owl.
