This is the story of a man named Larry who built a self-sustained and off-the-grid home out of two shipping containers. He wanted all of the comforts of a home and to be able to live in it comfortably up to a year or more if need be.

To do this he ordered two sea containers and welded them together to make one awesome cabin. Water is heated using solar power or by woodstove if necessary. Access to water is by well. The two containers combined add up to a 40′ x 16′ floor plan so about 640 square feet of space inside.

I always admire conversions like this barn to tiny cottage renovation.

I like them because they make great use of a structure that already exists.

In this case, what used to be a barn is now a beautiful little red cottage.

The best part is, it’s also available as a vacation rental (PS – have you checked out our new tiny house vacations section?) so you can stay in it if you want.

It’s a bed and breakfast in Portland, Oregon.

This is a box truck that has been converted into an amazing DIY solar mobile cabin/motorhome. It’s great because it’s off-grid-ready with plenty of solar-power! So if you’ve been thinking about living in tiny houses you’ve probably also considered a bunch of other ways of living alternatively right?

I’m excited to show you this amazing box truck conversion home that was hand built by Joseph Tayyar who was tired of the hustle and bustle of the city life.

These travel trailer to cabin conversions are for those of you who love the idea of tiny living but want to remain as mobile as possible.

With a trailer renovation like this you can still move about since these units are aerodynamic and lighter in weight than stick built homes on trailers.

And even if you don’t want to move around very often, trailers renovated like this easily serve as tiny cabins on your land.

That’s why I’m showing you these two classic trailers that have been tastefully renovated and decorated for the simple life.

I thought you would enjoy this shed from a tiny house design that was converted into an amazing little bunkhouse. Sheds make great bunkhouses because they are typically small and simple in design. Additionally, sheds can be easily insulated to create a comfortable living space. And, because they are not attached to a house, they can be located anywhere on your property – making them ideal for guest houses or rental units. If you are thinking about converting a shed into a bunkhouse, be sure to check with your local zoning laws to ensure that the project is permitted.

The owner Sue did a great job not only in the design and the interior but also in completing this project for only around $12,000. I find these sheds converted into tiny houses so fun and interesting and it’s fun to see people convert them into beautiful tiny homes like the one below. If your shed is located in an area with good weather, you may want to consider adding a porch, just like Sue did. This will give you additional outdoor space to enjoy and can even be used as an extra bedroom or office. See how she did it below!

This is our top 10 shipping container tiny houses. When it comes to tiny living, shipping container tiny houses are a great option because they’re inexpensive, usually recycled, and extremely durable. This means that by turning one into your home you’re helping the environment by using something that already exists as a shelter, you’re saving money compared to building from scratch, and your home will be able to withstand almost anything as long as you convert it correctly.

All of that sounds pretty great I’m sure, but how the heck do you make a shipping container into a home? How small can it be? I think you’ll be surprised by this top 10 list of shipping container homes because they range in several sizes and in a bunch of different levels of luxury, too.

The first container home I’ll show you is interesting because it’s expandable, just like RVs that have slide outs. This conversion has lots of sliders, as you’ll see in the photos below. They’re used to keep the unit mobile so in case you wanted to move it, it’s relatively easy and simple to do since it can go down to a width of approximately 8′ and a length of 40′ when everything’s closed up. It’s called the MDU which stands for Mobile Dwelling Unit, as seen on DorNob.

A few weeks ago I was exchanging e-mails with Kenny in Portland who wants to turn his garage into a studio. It’s just a one-car garage so I’d really consider this to be tiny house living (in a garage). But seriously. With the renovation done right, it can be turned into a really nice studio slash tiny guest house.

I think it already looks good on the outside. Kenny recorded a video walkthrough of the garage as he talks about his ideas for the project. He wants to hear your feedback, suggestions, and ideas.
