Just moved into an approx. 600 sq ft cottage in the mountains of NC.

It was built in 1939 as a garage – and was converted in the 50’s to a house.

Many of the door handles are polished wooden branches (for the closets and the back door and the bedroom door).

I used many of the hints and ideas from other folks ‘living small’ to take advantage of the unusual and tiny spaces in this place.

Truly enjoying the downsized way of living – and with those views out the back door…how could I not?

I’m so thrilled to show you this tiny home that was built using three shipping containers. Steve, the owner/builder, has been collecting ideas for this project for years.

He’s a computer programmer who loves designing and building. His website is awesome because he shows you how he did it, too.

Here’s a simple and relatively tiny A-frame cabin in the woods. It was built in 1968 in the woods of Dorrington, California.

Once you go inside you’ll see it has a classic firewood stove made out of cast iron. A simple staircase system takes you upstairs to the bedroom and loft hangout with balcony.

This tiny cabin is on the Pt. Reyes peninsula along the Northern California coast.

It’s a 260-square-foot building designed to support a large group of children for a yearly family summer camp.

The cottage is on a dairy farm and has a fun and yet traditional vibe that expresses the rural setting of the land.

Most of the materials used are non-corrosive and resistant to wear like the galvanized sheet metal on the roof, the batt siding and painted plywood.

I always appreciate a garage to studio conversion because they’re usually small and make great use of space.

This is just that… A studio that used to be a garage which was renovated into a tiny guest house.

It has floor heating, cathedral ceilings, a beautiful bathroom and a full sized kitchen ready for you to cook in.

And it’s in Boulder, Colorado! Another reason I really like garage conversions is because they make better use out of a structure that already existed. And this one- as you’ll see below- has been very nicely converted into a studio that I’d enjoy living in.

This is a Reader Submitted Guest Post – Share Your Small House Story Too

Hi Alex,

My partner and I bought this small house as a second home in early 2012, as a retreat from our lives in the “biggish” city of Durham, NC.

The house, located in Blowing Rock, NC (just 3 hours from our primary home) was built as part of a “future” 21 unit vacation rental community.

This off grid modern solar house in California isn’t tiny or even that small… But since it’s 100% off the grid I thought it was a smart enough design to include here.

At 1200 sq. ft. it would make a great home for a family or person who spends lots of time at home. It’s called the IT HOUSE and is made of glass and metal in the middle of the beautiful desert landscape in Pioneertown, California. The design system used to build this house was created by Taalman Koch.

You might have already learned about the Tiny House Hotel in Laura’s recent post.

I’ve even featured a few of their tiny houses recently including the Miter Box.

The best part is that you (and anyone else) can stay in these awesome little homes.

Almost two years ago I blogged about giant sewage tubes being turned into a tiny house hotel in Mexico.

Today, so far, we’ve got three stick built tiny houses on trailers in Portland, Oregon as the country’s first official “Tiny House Hotel.”

And I’ll bet there’s more in the works. But anyways, let me introduce you to the owners and creators of this magnificent place.

I smiled from ear to ear when I read these words from the messages area of our Tiny House Talk Facebook Page, “I haz a tiny cabin in the woods! I’m on the Olympic Peninsula.”

Yes! I love when I get to hear of people achieving their goals, especially when they finish building a tiny cabin in the woods. So Bogdan was nice enough to let me share some photos of the tiny cabin with us so you can enjoy them below… So, when are you going to start building your tiny cabin in the woods?
