We’re Mat and Danielle – two Canadian, minimalist nomads who are exploring long-term travelling, house sitting, and living/working in our 2002, Ford E-150 conversion van. We’re sharing our ongoing lifestyle experiments on YouTube and on our blog: Exploring Alternatives.
We started travelling 2.5 years ago after selling our house and quitting our jobs. We travelled to Costa Rica, California, Australia and Thailand for almost a year, using our savings and the money we made from the sale of our house. Then we secured online work that allowed us to keep moving for another year, so we travelled to Iceland, Germany, Spain and the United States.
We officially moved into the van several months ago and are travelling across Canada. We’re working in cities/towns during the week, and camping/hiking on the weekends. We stealth camp, sleep in Walmart parking lots, park in the driveways of friends and family, and camp in provincial parks.

These are tiny houses built atop classic farm trucks in Australia. They’re some of the most amazing house trucks I’ve ever seen.
Rob Scott, of Hollyburton Park, has been building studios on the back of old farm trucks over the past few years. The housetrucks offer the extra space you might want to use as a backyard office, guest house, children’s rooms, or anything else you might be able to think of. This is a log siding tiny house on wheels for sale in New York. The buy it now price is $25,000. You can learn more about this tiny cabin on wheels in this post when we originally featured it on Tiny House Talk a few years back.
When you step inside this custom built tiny house you are in the living room with a cozy sofa bed, a rustic bookshelf, and a fireplace. There is space for a small dining table or desk near the kitchen. In the kitchen, there is a small sink, two burner propane cooktop, microwave and mini refrigerator.
The bathroom has a full-size fiberglass shower and composting toilet. Up the ladder to the sleeping loft you’ll find a queen size bed. The entire interior of the home is natural pine with foam insulated walls. There is a galvanized roof and this tiny house is secured and built right onto a double axle utility trailer. This is John’s custom built tiny house truck. It’s 8′ wide, 23′ long and weighs about 6 tons.
And right now we get to tour it thanks to our friends at Tiny House Giant Journey. When they were driving down the highway with their tiny home in tow they spotted it at a gas station and raced to go see it and hopefully meet the owner.

Nestled within nature in Northern Arizona is this sustainable tiny home made of Earth owned and built by Cody Lundin.
You may recognize him from various television interviews and magazines. As a professional survivalist for over 25 years, Cody built his own self-reliant earth house which, by the way, is completely off the grid.
One of the main goals, when Cody was designing and building his tiny home was to ensure the interior temperature remains habitable at all times, no matter how hot or cold it may be outside. So the stone floors absorb the natural sunlight throughout the day to help keep the home warm at night. This is especially important during the winter.
