Scott has been surfing on this famous California beach for 50 years and has plenty of experience with boats and RVs, so when the rules about the size of vehicles allowed on the beach changed, he decided to downsize. He wasn’t planning on building something himself, but with the shutdowns of 2020, he decided to take on the project.

And wow! He did a great job. His stealth box truck tiny house has a full-sized bed, an L-shaped couch on an electric lift that houses his electrical system, a separate bathroom with a boat toilet and shower stall, and excellent under-floor storage so he doesn’t have to clutter the space with overhead cabinets. Enjoy!

Joey’s story isn’t one you’d expect — he nailed the “dream job” of working in mechanical and biomedical engineering for the FBI in Washington, D.C. — and then realized it wasn’t for him! He got a different job working as a software engineer that ended up going remote in 2020 — and before he knew it, Joey was buying and converting a van.

He’s lived in the van you’ll see below for three years on and off. In the “off” time, he’s been backpacking around the world, living even more simply than he does in his rig. He designed it to stand up to all kinds of weather, and just wait until you see the neat way he included a shower, closet, and pantry into his home on wheels.

While we’ve seen many Hobbiton-inspired tiny houses before, this is a “real” one, recently entirely on the same farm as the Hobbiton movie set for the “The Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies. The original set designers helped create the home to ensure it was as true to Peter Jackson’s interpretation of the books as possible.

And wow! The home feels genuine, cozy, and almost like coming “home.” Designed to be the abode of the Proudfoot family, which has three small children, there’s a child’s room with bunk beds and toys and even a fort built in the corner of the living room. And the kitchen! It looks ready to make the first and second breakfast and then hop onto elevenses. Enjoy the tour!

Rita lived in this MitchCraft-built tiny house for four years before selling it, and that lived-in history is part of what makes it worth studying. The standout detail is small and clever: the loft bedroom has a landing you can actually stand on while getting in and out of bed. Anyone who has shuffled sideways off a mattress into thin air will understand why that single square metre of floor matters more than almost any other upgrade at this size.

Downstairs, a built-in bench gives the living room a permanent lounging spot without furniture eating the floor, and the kitchen carries all the major appliances plus a breakfast bar. The bathroom holds a washer/dryer unit, a glass shower stall, and a residential toilet rather than RV-spec fittings.

Editor’s note: this home was listed at $70,000 in Boulder, Colorado in early 2024 and has sold. MitchCraft is still building — current listings from other sellers are linked below.

Built by Telescope Homes in Florida, this 40-foot container home is a single-level design that does something most container conversions cannot: it separates the bedroom properly. A private first-floor bedroom sits at one end, the living room at the other, with a galley kitchen between them — so the sleeping space is a real room behind a door rather than a curtained corner or a loft.

At 40 by 8 feet it works out to about 320 square feet. The kitchen carries an oven, a farmhouse sink, and an apartment-sized refrigerator, and the bathroom has a residential toilet and a tiled shower stall. The technology is more thorough than most: every light switch is a smart glass touchscreen controllable by app, and every outlet has USB-C and USB-A charging built in. A glass slider opens the living end to the view, and a mini-split handles heating and cooling.

Editor’s note: this home was listed at $59,000 in early 2024, with the builder offering to mount it on a trailer as an RV for a further $15,000. It has sold — current listings are linked below.

JK and Kim live part-time in a Ford Transit van which they purchased second-hand and are actually the third owners of. Despite the van being built out when they first got it, they’ve gone through about 4 layout iterations to get it to the point it is today — and that’s come at the pricetag of nearly $100,000.

But the couple don’t regret the cost, because they love escaping the city and enjoying the outdoors. Most of their travel is spent on weekends away within only an hour and two from their home, but they have taken awesome longer trips as well. While they aren’t planning on going full-time just yet, they love the freedom that weekend tiny living offers them.

Alexi works as a travel nurse, and a van allows her to have a home away from home while she goes from spot to spot. She initially thought she’d get a cheap old van and throw a mattress in it, but her dad encouraged her to “do it right” and that she did! Her van is lovely with all the features of a home — including a bathroom with a shower!

She chose the controversial “convertible” layout, with a dinette that becomes her bed. This makes the van seem extra open and lovely! The inclusion of a back table that slides out from the garage is a great way to expand the living space outdoors.
