Yoga Teacher Building his own Tiny Home – A guest post by John Cole

Hey Alex,

I love your website! It’s helped me dive deeper into the tiny house community and expand my knowledge so much to help with my own build. Here’s a little about me and my story:

I’m 24 years old and teach yoga at the Mt. Washington Resort in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire. My apartment lease ran out at the end of August so I’ve been camping in the beautiful fall foliage while I work four days out of the week and the other three days I drive 2 hours down to Dover where I’m building the house.

I first heard of tiny houses about a year and a half ago. I really fell in love with them when I was in the middle of a cleanse and at a loss of what to do with myself, so I started researching them; the seed had been planted. From there my passion grew more and more gathering all the info I could about plans, layouts, building practices, etc… I started teaching myself how to use sketch up and design everything. I would scour craigslist every day looking for a suitable trailer until one-day last summer I finally found the one. Its about 7.5′ x 20′. I got it for $400 from a guy in Maine. My friend Seth helped tow it to my parent’s house where I proceeded to spend the summer greasing the bearings, rewiring brakes/lights, and the labor-intensive process of grinding all the rust off. I covered the trailer in POR and Seth welded reinforcements all over.

mike-basich-snowboarder-tiny-houser-04

This 228 sq. ft. tiny cabin is about 3 miles away from the nearest road so you have to get to the cabin using a snowmobile. The owner/builder (Mike Basich) is a retired pro boarder that still loves to snowboard.

One of the best features of the cabin is that it has a hot tub and a ski lift. Yes. He keeps it simple, straight to the point, and in line with his passion. His electricity comes from solar panels, his heat from firewood, and water from melted snow. So it’s safe to say he’s off the grid. Mike also has a tiny house on wheels he uses to travel around the country with his dog, snowmobile, cameras, and boards.

bread-van-converted-into-guest-bedroom-micro-cabin-in-norway-001

This old bread van converted into a guest bedroom isn’t exactly a fully functioning cabin or tiny house but I still thought you might enjoy it (since I did).

Basically… It’s just a private bedroom! But inside there’s no bathroom, shower, or kitchen. Just space for sleeping and hanging out in peace. And it’s heated (and has wi-fi), too.

The van is available as a nightly rental if you’re ever wanted to stay in Vestby, Akershus, Norway. It has over 43 raving reviews from previous guests.

The van is a 1968 Citroen HY. It has a double bed and little sofa inside. The bathroom you get access to is inside the house on the property.

26-tiny-house-for-sale-in-idaho-002

This 26′ tiny house for sale is located in Nampa, Idaho. It’s 8’6″ wide and 13’5″ tall so it’s legal to tow on public roads without any special permits.

According to the Craigslist listing it is titled as a 2014 RV travel trailer and is available with an asking price of $35,000.

As always be sure to only deal with people locally to avoid scams. Do not wire money in any way without first seeing the home, checking title, and doing your proper due diligence.

3-in-1-transforming-expanding-shipping-container-tiny-home-01

Right now I’m showing you these 3-in-1 transforming/expanding shipping container shelters designed and built by MSS.

The units are easy to ship since they’re the size of a shipping container so you can have it moved just about anywhere pretty easily.

Once you have it on site and deployed you’re able to triple the size of the unit in just a few minutes. This isn’t necessary for most of us, but I think it’s fun and worth taking a look. Watch the videos below to see how it works. Enjoy!

Couple-Moves-to-12-Sq.-Ft.-Tiny-House-with-No-Electricity-001

In search of a more simple life and completeness, the couple, Michael and Diana lived in a 144 square foot tiny home in Northern California for seven years. They feel their house was not tiny but just right for them.

The tiny house does not feel small as you will see below. The natural sunlight and surrounding trees there are magical.

Diana says you enter a timeless time here. And it’s easy to forget about everything but the present moment.

The fireplace is a necessity in this home as it creates heat for the home and bathing water.

With no electricity which means no refrigerator, no meat, no ice cream Diana would cook beautifully colored fresh vegetables in one small cast iron pot over the open fire for their meals.

Enjoy the photos and video below of this unique simple way of living.

villa-big-retired-army-generals-tiny-cabin-office-get-away-001

Villa BiG is a guest post by Gary Huffman, a retired army general who built his own 438 sq. ft. tiny cabin as an office and get-away

One theme that is common among military people of all services is that one collects a great deal of memorabilia along the way, either intentionally or unintentionally. These memorabilia may be on display in your workspace, or your den, or packed away in the attic or garage. After thirty-one years I had items scatted among all those places!

I was serving in Iraq in 2005 when I began to consider retirement, however upon my return to the United States circumstances changed. I was selected for a new position in a different city; I was accepted to attend the United States Army War College; and I was promoted to Colonel. All of these were good things and I continued to collect “stuff” along the way.
