How would your life be with no mortgage, no car, and a teeny tiny house to call home? When I first heard about Tammy Strobel and her husband Logan they were living simply in a minimalist apartment. Today they are living in their own mortgage-free tiny house on wheels designed and built by PAD Tiny Houses.

But why? Around six years ago Tammy was dissatisfied with her life because she was commuting for two hours every day just to go to a job that she didn’t even like. They were $30k in debt, owned two cars, and were living in a two-bedroom apartment. So Logan suggested they downsize.

I have been part of the tiny house community since I first saw Jay Shafer on Oprah back in 2008.

We used that inspiration to begin building our tiny house in 2009. As you might imagine, since that time I have seen a lot of other tiny house blogs and become part of the small but growing community of tiny house builders.

There are so many great designs and ideas out there now and many tiny house builders are creating some amazing homes that are smaller than most traditional bedrooms. I thought I might share my favorite tiny houses – in no particular order.

It is funny for me to turn on HGTV and see a small house about the size of my own called an “Extreme Home.” For me, and I am sure for most tiny house dwellers, these little spaces are just “home,” not extreme at all. On Thursday, December 6th HGTV aired a segment on tiny house bloggers Tammy Strobel and Logan Smith along with their tiny home designer Dee Williams.

The segment, only a few minutes long, was a quick look into the way tiny house owners live their daily lives. The integration of their environment to their daily activities is most notable and I think is one of the most fascinating things I notice about people who chose to simplify their lives in this way. None of us just slog through life waiting for the next thing to happen to us. We are people who take control of our world and face it deliberately. They focus on Tammy leaving her corporate job to pursue writing. I believe that this drastic lifestyle overhaul is what allows many of us to live our dreams.

simply car freeHave you ever thought about going car-free and using your bicycle as your main form of transportation?

I’ve always thought about going completely car-free and I guess I’m not really sure what’s stopping me. But I got a message from a friend about Tammy’s new ebook, Simply Car-Free.

I read through the introduction and so far it’s great–easy to read and really helpful tips. I’m going to order my own copy and read the rest tonight. I’ll follow up with a review.

I’m especially excited about these topics…

  • Maintenance and Upkeep
  • Finding Inexpensive Parts and Labor
  • Car-Free Grocery Shopping
  • 3 Bike Buying Tips

But there’s much more than just that. Simply Car-Free is a comprehensive guide to living without a car.

Riding a bicycle for daily transportation offers numerous benefits…

  • saves money
  • improves health
  • reduces stress
  • reduces air pollution

And these are just a few of the benefits of using a bicycle instead of a car, truck or SUV.

So what about you? What do you think about going car-free and using a bicycle as your main form of transportation?
