Tiny House Blogger Ryan Mitchell recently posted an anti-tiny house article that appeared elsewhere on the World Wide Web.
His post specifically showcased the not only negative but often ignorant comments from that original article. He made the deliberate choice not to link to the original article, which was written with a tone of superiority and implied that tiny house builders are all just Unibombers waiting to happen.
Here is the thing that I think many people seem to forget: We aren’t part of a tiny house army intent on taking away everyone’s 1,000 or larger square foot homes and replacing them all with tiny structures.

Since I am spending some time in Detroit, Michigan for the winter I decided to reach out to my cousin, Charlie Zink, who blogs about his adventures biking around the streets of Detroit and taking photos of the interesting things he finds there.
Charlie comes across quite a few amazing gems on his adventures so I asked if he had ever seen tiny or small houses in the city.
His search for tiny spaces yielded some pretty neat results. I thought I would share two of them with you today.
One appears to be a crudely made shelter and the other a small abandoned building that may have some use in the future. Scroll down to see more.

It might be the number one comment here at tiny house talk: “I want a small space, but I don’t want a loft. I’m looking for a single story design.”
Friend of Tiny House Talk and designer Dan Louche has created a fantastic tiny house without a loft and it is available on his website. Alex has spoken to Dan about the tiny house he built for his mother, which is the same design. I wanted to ask him a few additional questions about designing and building a single story home on wheels.
What was your reason for designing a single story tiny house?
The first house I ever built was our single story Tiny Retirement model (affiliate). It was for my mom. She had been living in a mobile home that had started to deteriorate and so she needed to move. I loved many of the tiny houses that were available but I knew a loft wouldn’t be an option for my mom. So I worked out a design without one that could still accommodate her lifestyle.

Deep underground in London’s south east side, architect Laura Clark did something that most people would never even think about doing. She renovated a public bathroom and made the 600 square foot space her own home.
The public loo, as they are referred to across the pond, was long abandoned and Clarke took it as a personal challenge to renovate the space and make it her home. She referred to it as “micro regeneration.” The story in the Telegraph shares a bit about the history of the space and exactly how she went about her renovation.
You can see the beautiful kitchen and sitting room in the photo gallery in the post. I love her use of open shelving in the kitchen – something I prefer. Why keep all your pretty dishes and, in my case, great bar ware behind closed doors? The rest of her kitchen is streamlined and modern. Check out the slideshow here. You can also see her amazing use of outdoor space, something you don’t expect from a public toilet.

You may have already heard the news. Jay Shafer, the founder of The Tumbleweed Tiny House Company, is leaving to start a new business venture. The announcement was made quietly and there isn’t even anything listed on the Tumbleweed Tiny House website at this time.
On October 27th, the Facebook page for Tiny House Design posted the following status update:
“Jay Shafer is leaving the Tumbleweed House Company. That’s the sad news. The good news is that he’s starting up a new endeavor focused more on “social justice via housing rights.” He needs some feedback on a new name… I’ll post a survey next – please vote to help Jay name his new organization.”

I had the opportunity to speak with Alex from right here at Tiny House Talk the other day. We had a great conversation and he asked a lot of great questions. Some of the things he asked got me thinking about where this all started and just exactly how we got to a point in our lives where building and living in a tiny house seemed like the right decision.
Matt and I have been together a long time – nearly 18 years. We met in college and we were 19 and 20 when we started dating. It’s funny because a lot of people want to know how the two of us can live and work together but we just don’t think about it like that. We like spending time with each other so it just comes naturally. We have always had very complimentary dreams. Those dreams didn’t always include a tiny house; especially since we didn’t even know what a tiny house was back then, but they always included a desire to live in a more extraordinary way.
When I think back on it, I realize that the tiny house idea was really not that far from some of our earlier yearnings for adventure. Maybe it is possible that the concept was always in our DNA but until we discovered the tiny house movement we just didn’t realize it.
