Writer Living Debt-Free in Her Tiny Home

Alaska wanted to live a beautiful—and free—life. Tiny living eliminated her biggest expense—housing—allowing her to live debt-free and enjoy the things she really cared about.

Tiny Living Removes the “White Noise” From Her Life

Alaska bought her Mint Tiny Home second-hand.

Interview:

What got you into tiny living?

I wanted to live a beautiful life. To me, that meant being a writer, locational freedom, and being in control of my time. After doing a ton of research and math, I realized that if housing was my biggest expense, it was my greatest opportunity to free myself. Then, I saw a tiny house online and fell in love… 🙂

Did you build your home or buy it? How long did the process take?

I bought my tiny house secondhand. It was originally built by Mint Tiny House Company in British Columbia, and I purchased it from the original owners for 78k. It took almost three months to figure out how to actually buy a tiny house, and to process the transaction during the height of Covid.

How has tiny living changed your life (for better or worse)?

Tiny living has changed my life dramatically, and all for the better! It’s taken the white noise out of my life, and now all that’s left is what I love. My life feels very saturated now, like I experience everything ten-fold. A tiny house has also been a great training tool in terms of helping me change consumption patterns, and consistently return to the question, what do I value most?

A tiny house has also given me a writing career! Ironically, I went tiny so I could afford retirement in case my writing never went anywhere, but now I make a living as a tiny home copy and content writer!

What’s the hardest part of tiny living?

The constant tidying. Also, navigating my first couple of winters with tiny home utilities.

What’s the most rewarding part?

The most rewarding part of living in a tiny house is that I no longer wonder, is it all going to be OK? This tiny house allows me to be debt and mortgage free, and that peace of mind is priceless. It’s why I named my tiny The Tiny House of Peace.

Any advice for people looking to go tiny?

If you keep thinking about it, there’s a reason. I think inspiration is divine, and if you’re feeling called to a tiny home, go for it! That being said, the tiny home movement is still in its adolescence, so make sure you do deep research on builders, talk to tiny home dwellers, get inspections, and make sure your tiny home comes with a certification. Also, don’t try to find tiny home parking first, unless you plan to start paying for your spot while you find a house to go with it!

    I love the interior design in this house. It’s gorgeous! It’s also warm and cozy. Love that wooden accent wall, and the beautiful countertop. It’s nice, too, to see so much space for living and having friends over. A lovely home!

      Bathroom is under the loft and the sauna is in the bathroom. When you enter the bathroom the sauna is to the back right and the shower is in the back left…
