Dawn built her modern off-grid tiny house in a solar powered workshop in Nova Scotia, Canada, with her business partners, Jennifer and James, from Full Moon Tiny Shelters.

In the latest video from Exploring Alternatives, we get a full tour of her open concept, minimalist yet luxurious tiny house; and we learn why she was inspired to build it, how she adapted her life to fit in a small space, and why she thinks tiny houses are here to stay.

I love this tiny house. I am going to try to get an RV and hopefully be able to make it mine inside. I also have a cat and they love small tight spaces and so do I. Good luck with this and I am so happy that there are so many people that see the good that tiny house living is doing for the environment.

Dawn: WOW! It is so empowering to see women living in tiny houses for a long period of time, especially off grid. I love the kind of lifestyle you have created for yourself, it is a happy, healthy and positive living arrangement.
You inspire me to do some thinking of my own to create a tiny home for myself to accommodate my mult-crafted talent. It helps me to have some extra cash on hand.
Keep up the good work as well as inspiring others.

    Love, love, love this.
    I truly do.
I’ve camped a lot for extended periods & have really enjoyed it.
I wish laws were more supported of these kinds of life choices.
    Thank you!!!! :):):)

Really nice house & enjoyed the video ! Thanks for posting this. I like her approach to finding a parking spot. It’s a great option & there are plenty of people who need house/land sitting or a caretaker.

I got a lot more out of this video than any of the ones I’ve watched so far on the Tiny House Summit. She addressed topics I would benefit from. Inspiring and well done.

Thank you for sharing your home and your life with us. I am a single 63 y.o. women that built my own tiny home 6 yrs. ago, a 22′ home, now, 6 yrs. later I have learned how to live an even simpler life with so much less, that I’m beginning to build myself a 16′, tinier home. It took time to feel what I did and did not truly need to live with/without. I love your home, thanks again for sharing.

I love the idea of property sitting as a way to find a place to park your home. I also had a “light bulb” moment when she talked about why she hadn’t put a washer/dryer in her home. The idea of making deeper connections with people (or mooching, however you want to look at it) and getting your laundry done at the same time really made me think.

Loved how Dawn shared not only about the “nuts and bolts” aspect of her home but also the larger questions, such as “why you are doing it,” and “what’s important…what’s enough.” Having moved from a three-bedroom SFH in August to a 750sf mobile home last summer, I completely concur with Dawn’s assessment that “it’s shocking how little becomes really necessary.” My two kitties and I could easily enjoy less space than we do now…and it was a lot of work but a real pleasure to let go of SO many things. Thanks, Dawn, for your collaborative work with partners at FMTS and for sharing wisdom with others here, too!

It’s so true! We need so much less space than we think we do.
