VW California XXL: Larger Version of the Classic Campervan!

This post contains affiliate links.

This is the VW California XXL. It’s a modern, oversized version of their iconic VW bus.

Unfortunately, there are no plans that I’m aware of to bring it to the United States. It does kind of look like a Sprinter van though, doesn’t it? What are your thoughts on it? Is this something you would get? Where would you go with it?

Would you buy this van or go with something else?

So what do you think of this camper van? Would you buy one? If not, what would you get instead?

I could live in this vehicle for some time. I would not want to do it for a permanent lifestyle. But I bet there are some younger people who would and could.

If it was all electric, absolutely.

Maybe Tesla will do it someday 😀

Look like the same layout as a small 80’s van/motorhome based on the Renault chassis. (Wish I could remember the name of it now, but age and all. . .) right down to the pull-out bathroom/shower.

But why wait? The Mercedes Metris is about the same size and is available here in the US right now. For something just a shade larger the Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, and Dodge ProMaster are also all available in the US.

I’ve been living part-time in my Sprinter conversion, (7′ wide, 20′ bumper to bumper, 6’3″ inside headroom, 20 miles to the gallon combined [with 67,000 miles of data], set up for off-grid.) for 7 years now. (The rest of the time I live in 380 sq. ft. carved out of the corner of a barn.)

What is the sticker price on this one?

It’s a concept design they’re considering, it’s not in production and thus no price set… May see it at a car show for marketing purposes but that’s it for now…

Really sleek and modern. It doesn’t look like home to me though. I’ve been checking out some Roadtreks. They’re compact, but they have a warmer, cozy feel to them.

If you can,, go to a large RV show and see how many types there are.
In Hershey, PA. every september is the largest rv show in the usa. I have been to this show three times and it is fun to attend. Roadtrek makes several small vans like this, and they were bought out by Hymer this year (who is a european RV mfr). Small is about 19-24′ in length. Check out their website http://www.roadtrek.com namaste’, rachel

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that this VW California XXL will not be sold in the US?

I own a full sized 28 ‘Four Winds Rv! I hate all the work to get ready for a road trip.Having family back east (I live in Arizona), this long trip happens more than I like! I need a van that can load my electric wheeled chair in , this would work for that too! Loading clothes one time, food ect., Would be easier too! I wish to Goodness they’d get smart and open these up to USA! Are the available in Canada or Mexico? I’d do a road trip to import this! ???
