While handsome enough, I think one might like to be careful about claiming “the most beautiful” status for this thing. It invites comparison. Who can forget the incomparable Earth and Sky Palace, http://tinyhouseswoon.com/earth-and-sky-palace/ or the original Little Bird, among several gorgeous Zyl creations: http://www.zylvardos.com/little-bird/jslayxt5ik25jorjh7jovcfuvkvbwm
or any one of a number of wildly creative and original projects?

Am curious if anyone else dislikes THOW’s that have the bathroom on the other end of the place rather than closer to the bedroom. Not only for when one has to get up at night, but the thought of taking a bath or shower than having to walk thru the main living area (even in a robe) if folks are visiting is not something I want to do.

Not always a option, a THOW needs to be road safe for towing… This means things like everything in it should be balanced for weight. So the THOW doesn’t sway in any particular direction while being towed as to not risk over balancing it and causing a accident…

Weight distribution should also be 60/40 with most of the weight forward towards the towing tongue as to minimize chance of drag and help keep center of gravity closer to tow vehicle for making safer turns…

Then there’s the wheel wells… Since they intrude into the space then you have to consider what happens to everything in the bathroom if you place it over those wheel wells, which would be the case if you put it in front the bedroom… Along with losing that big window…

While putting the bathroom at the back and the bedroom before it means people will have to go through the bedroom to get to the bathroom, which some people consider worse than having the bathroom on the opposite end of the THOW…

But that’s just a sampling of options to give some idea of what’s involved and there are many alternative ways to arrange things… So it’s not impossible to get the bathroom between the bedroom and rest of the house… But it will usually involve some sort of compromise in some other aspect of the house and that’s why you won’t always see it that way…

There are pros and cons to every design aspect to consider…

Fortunately, most Tiny House builders will do it completely custom… Not sure on Escape Homes as they’re more of a RV builder turned Tiny House builder and still make most of their products like they used to make Park Model RV’s, with some minor exceptions for certain models they now sell… But there are plenty of other builders who will give you just about any layout you want within reason… Just be aware of the trade offs to be sure it’s the layout you really want…

Though, most of the design constraints are for THOWs that need to be road legal and not require a special moving permit…

Going wider or just building on a foundation can give a lot more design options… Also, having things like a water tank is not only good for going off-grid or simply boondocking, but gives a way to counter balance by adjusting how much water it contains and placing it where you can leverage it to adjust the weight balance of the THOW for safe towing… and it lets you adjust to whatever you may put into your house in case you change the weight balance later for any reason…

Wow, James D.! Thanks so much for the valuable info. I’d never really considered all of that, but it certainly makes sense. As much as I’d hate having my bathroom just right off of the kitchen, sometimes safety would dictate it. Also, that would mean that you’d really have to take into consideration where your kitchen would be in that if you get full sized appliances, that would add a considerable amount of weight as well.

Beth I see your point but also do not see it as a big deal. My bath in my stick built home is a distance from my bedroom and I must walk past the kitchen and through the LR to get to it. I can’t see any time when I would A_ take a shower and not dress in the bathroom. B- have guests still up when I decided to shower. and C- if it is family what difference does it make? I am wanting to sell the 100 sq ft and get a tiny in the near future.

Great start for seniors. Most RV Parks will have no need of energy wasting windows and with a little judicious cost savings on materials the price could almost become affordable. Two options for us would be nice, closet space and maybe an arched roof if we will not need the lofts. Closet space can be added beside the bed as there is plenty of overhead room without a loft.(picture Garage door opener lowering a floating closet over the bed) Convection/Micro over cook top gets 3 drawers under.Tons of changes possible with this plan.

  • Bill Burgess
    July 18, 2017, 5:09 pm

Oh and another thing, if that ginormous loft is not vital, I could install 10′ of usable closet space… Thanks to our Alaskan contributor to the Tiny House movement…I am very surprised that people wanting the smaller footprint haven’t been using this all along. Cook Top with Convection Miro over always allows two or three drawers under which is needed….Lots of options developing at 4Fathoms Designs for these type of models.

I know, I shouldn’t be writing just to complain but what’s with the hubris : “World’s Most Beautiful Tiny Home ” ?? I mean, not even close! I really feel that this hyperbole does you no good as I am sure I am not the only person distracted by thoughts about how not beautiful it is . By the way if anyone would like to see some quite lovely tiny homes on wheels you could start with http://www.zylvardos.com/photo-galleries/

Great floor plan. Huge windows are essential for not feeling cramped, however, blinds should be integrated in between of glass for privacy.
I am not a big fan of sliding windows when it comes to energy efficiency and hurricanes. I would prefer outward opening ones preferably top hinged ones which can be open in light rain. Don’t like and need lofts and would reduce overall height for less wind resistance and easier towing.
Taking a shower in a bathtub is a compromise and not so comfy for the elderly. A 3’+ shower with a seat would be an option.
For those who are really into cooking a propane oven and an electric convection oven offers great alternatives. I would fill the gap above the fridge/freezer with a taller one.
But overall we have a THOW really suitable for permanent living which requires less compromising.
    Good job.

      July 18, 2017, 7:42 pm

Michael, why not a walk in bath… Have the benefit of being able to sit, no need to climb in and out, and it can double as a Jacuzzi… All while taking less space than a normal full bath…

Though, you could also opt for a steam shower, they typically have a little fold down seat option… There have already been some THOWs equipped with one of those…

Alternative to lowering the roof is to raise the floor… This gives room to put more of the mechanicals underneath, which helps with the shower then as then the shower bed sometimes needs to be raised but if the floor is already raised then you can walk straight in without needing to step up and for the elderly and physically limited it would allow for wheelchair access to the shower as well…

Not to mention help provide more floor space as things like the water heater can be kept below and not require a utility closet taking up space that can then be given to the living space…

Among other ways the use of space could be done differently…

At 62 (and husband 65), I don’t even look at the THOWs unless they have NO loft, a downstairs bedroom,a walk-in shower (no tub) and a full stove with oven. I do not like convection ovens. AND, since we are supposed to be making a smaller footprint, we grow a garden and can our own food. You need a full stove with oven for canning, baking, making a turkey etc. We want to downsize but still be able to continue our lifestyle without making sacrifices on everything.

P.S. Let’s drop the political agenda here. I come on here to enjoy a certain lifestyle, not to discuss political disagreements.

James, its all right what you are saying when it comes to shower, bathtub and raised floor.
Best is a walk-through bathroom next to the bedroom.
Raising the floor is great because all the weight is low where it belongs. But overall height is an issue, too. Nearly all THOW’s are lacking a decent width height ratio because of road worthy limitation. From my perspective a THOW should be mobile and movable any time. Otherwise you can go for a park model size which is much more comfortable to live in. That means that it shouldn’t not be significantly higher than its width.
In FL we have hurricanes and wind resistance is an issue.
When looking on park models which we have a lot, they usually aren’t as high as most of THOW shown here as long as they don’t have this cramped sleeping loft which aren’t for a tropical climate at all.

      • James D.
        July 19, 2017, 3:58 pm

Michael, actually, unless dealing with a small tear drop, camper, etc. then most RV’s push 12.5 to the max 13.5 foot height… Park Model RV’s are just also wider and thus don’t seem as tall because it’s more balanced… Some Park Model RV’s even go to 12 feet wide, almost making the height and width square…

While decks on the side can further make them seem wider…

As for hurricanes… Many THOW trailers have hurricane tie down points on the trailer chassis that you can run steel cables through and tether the house down to a nice solid foundation… Combined with hurricane rated construction and it should be more than adequate if you have time to prepare and still need something that will otherwise be mobile…

Tiny House windows can also still have storm shutters or attachment points for attaching add on protection panels… Or you can just have a fold down deck that can fold back up and forms a wall layer in front of the windows and doors…

Among other ways you can prepare for such conditions…

Like if you have a property in someplace like Florida then it may be worth it to invest in building a concrete structure that you can park your Tiny House inside of… Essentially giving you a hurricane storm shelter for the Tiny House as well as someplace to put the house when you go on vacations, or otherwise travel without the house and want to keep it safe and essentially lock it all up and you can use it as a garage for your regular vehicle the rest of the time…

Some good ideas James. I like the concrete garage idea for Florida and lock ups. For that area it is a good idea to get cat 5 glass for those hurricane times also.

Very nice, but I didn’t see one closet, for hanging clothes or storing mops brooms etc.

    • James D.
      July 19, 2017, 4:23 pm

There’s storage closet between the fridge and the bathroom… The couch has a built in storage draw, the bed has built in storage compartment, and there’s storage cabinets and shelf above the bed… The lofts can also be used as storage attics… and you can always add additional storage furniture in the spaces not being used…

In the video, he also said if you don’t want a bathtub then they can swap that for a shower and use the freed up space for additional storage, among other options he listed…

      • Dominick Bundy
        July 19, 2017, 7:28 pm

I noticed there were drawers shelves and the lofr that can be used as storage . But ususally one can not fold up a broom, mop , snow shove or vacum cleaner and put them away in a drawer That’s were one needs a CLOSET, also how about hanging clothes like dress shirts pants jackets. . that all needs to be hung up not folded in a drawer.. . There are the issues I think about when it comes to having/ needing closets..

        • James D.
          July 19, 2017, 7:59 pm

Dominick Bundy, you seem to have missed that I included a mention of a storage closet between the fridge and bathroom!

Though, just FYI, there are foldable and extendable broom options too. Besides, it’s a tiny house and it’s not like you need to do a lot of sweeping before you’ll cover the entire house with even a very basic broom…

While back to that storage closet… there’s enough room for you to hang things in there unless you need something head to toe length… Simple shirts, folded over hanger pants, and jackets don’t need a lot of height to hang…

The shower option would also give you plenty of room to put a utility closet in the bathroom… Right now the bathtub is taking 5 feet of length but a shower can be less than 3 feet, giving at least two feet that can be converted into a full length closet that you can toss probably over 50 brooms into…

Long flat storage draws could also be placed in the kitchen at the kick point at the bottom of the cabinets that would have the length to lay down a broom and keep it underneath until needed..

Point is much of the interior is customizable… This particular model is the their extra long 32 foot length model… About two feet longer than the standard XL model…. But if you look at the other models you’ll see some of their other interior options, including clothing closet!

Bumps on the road to a single-payor healthcare system, which by the way would most likely allow one to travel around the country in their THOW without having to logistically plan their medical care and acquisition of medicines around their private health plan. Having to come back to my home state of Iowa once a month is going to suck.

I like the point that a previous commentor made regarding use of water storage to adjust balance on the trailer. Gives me the idea of splitting the water storage capacity between two tanks situated near the front and rear of the trailer, with a small amount of extra plumbing between the tanks to allow transfer of clean water between them using the pump that you would already have, which would effectively and easily allow for adjusting the weight distribution, much like ballast on a ship.

    • James D.
      July 19, 2017, 3:27 pm

Alex Kite, yes, ballasts are a good analogy of how that can work… And agreed, we really need better options that can work with the lifestyle we want to lead rather than be forced to change our life to fit those limited choices…

But considering how many medical professionals are just as fed up with the system as we are I’d imagine it wouldn’t take much of a push to establish a sort of national level doctors without borders type organization to cater to all those who may live a nomadic lifestyle or just wish to travel occasionally without worry of not having access to medical resources when they may need it…

It could especially be a boon to those who for whatever reason can’t easily go to a nearby medical facility and being able to send help to them instead could be quite the game changer for many who even with health care plans may not be getting the help they need…

It may start off slowly, with those of us with medical training helping out others in a given Tiny House community but surely that will just grow and expand to wherever it is needed… A lot can be done if we just work together…

      James D,

I’ve got the time of youve got the $ 🙂

Always wanted to be a hematologist/oncologist, but unfortunately having an on-and-off disability put the loans out of reach. So I got an EMT-B cert, volunteered for a while on a VFD.

Your comment gave me an idea– mobile hospice. Or secluded in a village of tiny houses. Maybe it’s already a thing.

It’s unfortunate that the factor that would probably be in the way currently for medical care structured for nomads, is state-based insurance and licensure. But from my view, to be a doctor especially in this country, is such a privilege– it should be a sanctioned option for pro bono care which should be strongly encouraged (if not required), much as it is for lawyers.

I like the traveler homes, the options are a nice addition, the shelves below the kitchen window would be nice for herbs. The bedroom is very nice, but I too would like to see the bathroom next to the bedroom. The tiny homes just keep getting better and better.
