There’s Nothing Wrong with Tiny Houses by Hollie Downes

When many people hear the words dream house, they may think about a McMansion with 4000 square feet or even more. For many other people, however, that dream is out-of-reach or may not even fit their own visions of the perfect home. For many reasons, more people are opting for tiny houses. When imagining its size, think about a covered wagon instead. Most tiny houses range somewhere between 100 and 150 square feet.

Top 7 Tiny House Benefits

* Thrift.

Many people can save for and build their own houses without incurring massive debt. A tiny house moves them out of rentals or asphyxiating mortgages and into their own place.

* Environmental friendliness

A tiny house is much kinder to the environment than the old sprawling single-family home. It is much more energy and resource efficient.

* Economy of size

Tiny houses are highly efficient dwellings. The space that is eliminated is unnecessary and inefficient space. Tiny houses make maximum use of every square foot of space. These are the homes of the future. A homeowner can live without debt, in comfort and with everything he needs. As the tiny house revolution saying has it, you can only live in one room at a time. If the space you’re in has everything you need, you don’t need more room.

* You won’t need a huge lot

With many tiny houses, you can even move them like mobile homes. Don’t like a lot you purchased? Drag the tiny house to a new one.

* Easier to keep-up and clean

Because of the efficiency of space, the interior mess never truly gets out of hand without a lot of help from the owner. Most house cleaning takes a matter of minutes and not hours. Keeping up a tiny house is easier than trying to maintain a large one.

* Much cheaper to heat and cool

You won’t need to spend money on conditioning all that air you walk through but never use.

* A tiny house is very thrifty where furniture and decorating are concerned.

There isn’t all that space you feel duty-bound to fill, lest your living room look vacant. You’ll only have to buy the pieces you need. You can buy higher quality furniture because of the fewer pieces required. Decorating will be much easier and more basic in a smaller environment.

The tiny house revolution is ideal for many younger people who can’t afford a conventional home. It’s also perfect for retired people who want to downsize their lifestyles and expenses. With a tiny house, there is no need to opt for a trailer park and rented land or an apartment building.

Most tiny houses are designed to have everything a modern person needs to live. They feature a kitchen, a bathroom, a living room, storage and some even sleep up to four people. It may not be everybody’s dream house, but for people seeking simplicity and another way of life, tiny houses might just be the way to go.

    I would include a couple more:

    Encourages family togetherness.
    Too many families living in big houses never even see each other. In a small house you learn to share and do everything together and kids enjoy that closeness (at least when they are younger).

    Better for disabled people.
    As we get older or become disabled taking care of a big house becomes a real problem and can lead to sanitation issues, clutter and fire hazards. Older people do not move as much and having everything close and convenient makes it easier for them to stay on their own for longer.

    Maintain independence.
    Again as we age and may make less income living in a small paid for efficient home may mean the difference between ending up living with family or being put in a nursing home.

    Frees up money for other things.
    The money you save not having a mortgage can be used any way you want and many people continue their education, invest, go on vacations or help their kids and family in ways that would not be otherwise possible.

    Better for alternative energy (more savings).
    Small homes with efficient appliances are excellent for using solar/wind and alternative energy which increases your savings even more.

    What would be real cool with tiny house movement would be to have whole subdivisions with nothing but tiny homes,lots bought free and clear all over the USA.What a way to go if you are a snowbird.

    For me, one of the big attractions is owning less, and living more simply, yet owning your house and the lot, unlike the situation with an apartment. And, if you want to move, you can take your house with you. On another page, someone wrote that for that price you could get a double-wide mobilehome and have a lot more space. That’s not the point though; and mobilehomes have other disadvantages anyway.

    Best advantage thus far for me: I’m happier with less.
    Second best advantage: I’m not tempted to buy stuff to fill space.
    Radically downsizing has freed me emotionally, physically, and financially. I haven’t regretted (in the long term) a single thing I gave away.

    I own 2.5 acres in a mountain community near Cotopaxi Colorado. I want to build a tiny home on it. I think this place is perfect for tiny homes as this form of home would make perfect sense for many of the people who live here. Lots of land available here and at a very good price. Wells are grandfathered in so no problem there. Hope to someday have others in the same area. Thanks so much, Steve

    What are the best solutions if you ever have privacy issues in tiny homes?

      I think blinds and fencing are good solutions for privacy.
