Top 3 Tiny House Plans for Couples

People ask us all the time how we can live together in 120 square feet. It is asked as though people are surprised that a couple would even have any interest in being that close to one another. We always smile and laugh politely and tell them that we have 15 acres so we always have an exit. In reality, we’ve never had any problems living in our tiny house. That isn’t to say we haven’t fought, but we also fought in a 2700 square foot house and the dynamics don’t really change.

So when I was talking with Alex here at Tiny House Talk about my next few topics and he suggested Tiny House Plans for Couples, I was intrigued. As far as I am concerned the best tiny house for a couple is whatever tiny house they want to live in. But, I accepted the challenge and here are three tiny house plans that I think can be great for couples.

The Tarleton by Tumbleweed Tiny House. Okay, I am a bit biased. Our tiny house is a Tarleton that we modified slightly as we built it. I think this 120 square foot home is perfect and has everything two people need: a reasonably sized kitchen, a bathroom with a shower, a nice sitting area, and a loft. Friends came to visit recently who hadn’t yet been to the tiny house and they commented on how much bigger it was than they thought. It is a pretty spacious little house that is designed well. Take a look at my other two favorite tiny house plans for couples below:

2. Prospector’s Cabin by Michael Janzen

The Prospectors Cabin by Michael Janzen. So even though I love the Tarleton design when Matt and I build another tiny house (and we will because we like to build stuff) we plan on building a 12X12 tiny house like the Prospectors Cabin. We like the idea of a square house and you can arrange the interior in just about any configuration. I also like the idea of a 12X12 house similar this one with a shed-pitch roof and a small staircase going into the loft with a bank of windows. The beauty of tiny house designs is that they are very customizable.

3. McG Tiny House Plans by Humble Homes

The McG Loft by Humble Homes. This modern style tiny house features the best combination of a staircase and loft within a home built to fit a trailer. I love the proposed interior design and I believe this could be a great solution for a couple looking for a tiny house. I am impressed with many of the designs offered through the Humble Homes website and if the McG isn’t the right fit, they may have other tiny house plans that will work for you.

Keep in mind, I chose these three designs based on my own personal preferences. I’ve been living comfortably in a 120 square foot house with another person for over a year and I know it’s possible. But that’s us. Your experience may be different and you and your partner might prefer a larger home or different plans. So what’s your favorite tiny house design for two people?

The Tarlington is ok but too big a bath. I’d move the front closets back to the bathroom 2′ it didn’t need. I’d also put in 6” shelves open on the kitchen side of the whole bath wall for can, dish, etc storage.

The Prospector is great but it’s a 288sq’ home, not 144sq’. Nor would I use the second floor sleeping as you don’t want to sleep in it’s heat in the south.
It would be great as a workspace as many jobs could be done from such a room. Also with a couple, they could get away from each other. But it’s 288sq’!

12’x12′ I think is a sweet spot in TH’s as so flexible in layout it can be adapted to one’s needs. Put the bath/kitchen on one wall and you still have 10’x12′ left for whatever you desire.

The McG loft has the loft problems of other loft homes like complicated building to get over 8′ high. The costs would be far better spent just extending the length instead of going up. Better would be go down to just 6’6” inside makes less cu’ to heat, cool, build and tow.

Alex isn’t there going to be a 120sq’ TH contest coming up?

      Hi Jerry,
      Thanks for your comments.

I know that tiny living will mean different things to different people, but I can tell you from living in the Tarleton for more than a year the bathroom is not too big at all. In fact, it is just about as small as I would go. The shower is tiny compared to typical showers – just big enough to get clean. There is room for the toilet with enough space not to bash your knees into the shower. And a teensy bit of room to stand in there and brush your hair or teeth when you’re getting ready. We built storage shelves into the wall studs to use as a “medicine cabinet.”

The two small closets in the front of the house are just enough to keep our clothes and laptops out of the way as well.

We would love to get one of these! We have been thinking about a tiny house in the mountain to call a home. We will need a small office also though.

    Cheers!
