I’d like this tiny house for myself. I like the layout and it would fit my needs perfectly.

They still sell this plan, so I’m certain they’d build you one 🙂 — Tiny House Talk Team

Why not just ask the contractors and suppliers to donate their time and materials? There seems to be so many “veteran charity” scams lately.

This is a fairly well-known tiny house company, so I don’t believe it’s a scam, but I do think one should always double check before offering money! — Tiny House Talk Team

With respect, Tiny Smart House wants to receives $59,000 from contributors. If they are “giving back,” it would be useful to know the dollar amount they are donating themselves. Is the $59,000 quoted full market value for the house? Is the burden on donors to foot the entire bill? Is the donation tax deductible? And how is the winning homeless vet chosen? Hopefully they’ve built some oversight into that part of their new program. Just a reminder to all – spend your charitable dollars, especially if they are limited by your own lean earnings, prudently.

I can’t figure out how that floorplan fits in that outside… where’s the ladder in the back of the fourth picture go? What happened to the “den” space that’s across from the sink in the floorplan on the smartHouse website? Why does the seventh picture look like it has a loft over a gooseneck, but the outside doesn’t have a gooseneck?

I think this one might be bigger on the inside.

That or the website was a tad bit confusing. I took pictures under their Williamette model, but they have multiple different lengths available, but only these interior shots. So it could be a longer version of the same style house. — Tiny House Talk Team

This confuses me. If readers are being asked to pay for a tiny house through our contributions, what exactly is the Tiny SMART House donating?

I think their labor/time is the idea. But it wasn’t spelled out exactly. — Tiny House Talk Team

Providing a home to a needy person – veteran or not – is admirable. But there has to be more. Who eill pay the utilities? Where will it be parked? Will the recipient have the income and the life skills to maintain living in the home? In other words, how much in the way of support services will be available?

While I do promote helping veterens, this particular tiny house looks a lot less professional than most. And, for $59K I’d expect something that didn’t look like it was made for $100 bucks.

    BUYER/DONATOR BEWARE.

I hired this company in 2012 to build our house and it was a horrific experience. They breached our contract and delivered an unfinished product: https://tryingtiny.wordpress.com/2013/10/26/why-we-wouldnt-recommend-our-builder/

Since then I have been contacted by several clients who have had worse experiences, they’ve given him money and received nothing in return. It is my belief that this company Tiny Smart House, owned by – Nathan Light Watson – does NOT have the client in mind and I would not advise “donating” any money to a campaign associated with them.

  • January 27, 2017, 2:05 pm

Please take a moment to read the reason we do NOT recommend doing any sort of business with Tiny SMART House.
    https://tryingtiny.wordpress.com/2013/10/26/why-we-wouldnt-recommend-our-builder/

Also be aware that this company has had legal judgements against it for failure to produce and working without a license.

$59,000 in their pocket isn’t donating nor being charitable.

It’s merely trying to crowd-source the cost of a home for a veteran.

Please put your $$ towards a veteran-specific reputable charity.

I have great respect for Tiny House Talk, but I’m quite disappointed that this particular builder has received any attention, ESPECIALLY for a Go-Fund-Me. It frightens me to think of anyone giving Nathan-Light-Watson of Tiny SMART House a single penny.

Our nightmare with this company is coming up on three years since my husband and I hired Tiny SMART House to build our tiny house dream for our family of four. We made 4 payments between the months of April 2014 – July 2014 totaling the amount of $21,000 and we still to this day have nothing to show for it. Our story is long and has continued to be a battle with zero resolution from Mr. Watson. To this day Mr. Watson has refused to return our money or produce materials that would total the $21,000 we paid to him and Tiny SMART House in Albany, OR.

Unfortunately, we’re not the only clients of this company that has met such ill fate, and in my opinion we won’t be the last. The only way we know how to stop this heartbreaking cycle, is by speaking out and sharing our story. We have just recently gathered the strength to publish our story for the first time – You can find the article in this month’s 2017 January edition of Tiny House Magazine.

PLEASE take what I’ve stated above as a serious WARNING to stop and think before giving NATHAN- LIGHT-WATSON of Tiny SMART House ANY money.

If anyone has any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me…

Hi Angela. Thank you for sharing your story! We haven’t heard anything like this yet, but we also don’t know all these builders personally and we need folks like you to bring this stuff to our attention.
