These are Tiny House Talk’s Top 10 Favorite Tiny Houses on Wheels of 2016.

Here at Tiny House Talk, we see a lot of tiny homes: the good, the bad and the ugly! And with the first month of 2017 almost over, we wanted to celebrate some of the best of the best tiny homes we saw last year. Of course, these are just our opinions and we had hundreds of amazing THOWs to choose from, but take a look and share your thoughts in the comments! Which is your favorite?

Top 10 Favorite Tiny Houses on Wheels of 2016

As part of this celebration, we will share 6 lists of our top picks in different categories (so stay tuned!):

  • 10 Favorite THOWs
  • Most Popular THOWs
  • Best “No-Loft” THOWs
  • Best THOWs under $30k
  • Best DIY THOWs
  • Best Shipping Container Tiny Homes

So here’s to the first list — Alex and I’s Top 10 Favorite THOWs of 2016.

1. Freedom Tiny House by Alabama Tiny Homes

From the beautiful color scheme right down to the amazing shower head, this house has it all. And people concerned about crawling into a loft can sleep on the downstairs pull-out bed. See more.

2. The Odyssee Tiny House by Baluchon

Here’s another THOW with downstairs sleeping arrangements. Baluchon never fails to disappoint, and their Odyssee is brimming with style and functionality. The living room on the landing is a unique touch. See more.

3. Ampersand Tiny House by Zyl Vardos

Abel Zimmerman of Zyl Vardos is a true craftsman, and we’ve never disliked any of his unique, hand-made homes. Plus, anyone who can pull off a bright orange sectional in a tiny house, has to be a master. See more.

4. Lititz Tiny Home: Modern Farmhouse by Liberation

One of the most popular color schemes of 2016 is the white-on-dark wood, and Liberation Tiny Homes makes that combo work brilliantly in their Modern Farmhouse model. The sliding farm door? Stylish and practical. See more.

5. Andrea’s Mt. Kilimanjaro Tiny House

I chose Andrea’s home because I loved how she took a bland, empty space and made it her own. When we posted the empty model, it received harsh reader reviews, but that all changed when you guys saw how Andrea transformed the place. See more.

6. Sweetgrass Tiny House by Driftwood Homes

When you see as many tiny houses as we do, something truly innovative always sticks out. The back-room guest bed is one of those “wow” features, and the robin’s egg blue and dark wood color combination is warm and inviting. See more.

7. DIY Shedsistence Tiny House

One of Alex’s absolute favorites, this home is incredible largely because of the couple who creatively and thoughtfully built it. The house’s storage capabilities put most other THOWs to shame. See more.

8. The Mouse House Tiny Home on Wheels

This house is from a brand new builder, and I must say their flagship design is promising. The number of windows alone makes this home feel twice as large, and the hickory hardwood flooring is to die for. See more.

9. Family of Four’s Maximus Extreme Living Solutions THOW

You just have to love families who aren’t afraid of tiny living. This house has a great design for domestic bliss, and even has a sink in the child’s loft, which is funky and awesome. See more.

10. The Greemoxie Tiny House with Folding Deck

This house makes the cut because it’s not only functional and stylish, it’s super “green.” We love sustainable building and the reclaimed materials, solar power, rainwater catchment system and more makes this a winner. See more.

So what do you think? What were your favorites? Who did we forget? Share in the comments! And get ready for the rest of our Best of 2016 celebration.

Ooooh what a tough decision. I simply can’t pick one. So I am going with the Shedsistence and the Sweetgrass, and for the same reasons as you all did. Though I have to say that in Sweetgrass, I would have to turn that little first floor bedroom into a nice big closet!!!

Oooh that would be awesome, Kathy!

These may be Tiny House Talks favorite 10 tiny houses, but not mine…! I think the best tiny house that I would rate No.1 regardless of price, for 2016 would be the Escape Vista’s Tiny House Vacation…! I love it’s clean lean design with out all the fluff, just right to business tiny house on wheels… But hay everyone is entitled to their opinion..!

I would have included it on our overall best, but it was such a great option for the “No-Loft” (or downstairs bedroom) tiny house list I am going to be posting soon 🙂 Stay tuned!

I think you can’t omit New Frontier’s Alpha Tiny House, which is almost in a class of its own, and I would agree with Zachary that Escape Vista (or I love the Traveler) should be on your 10 Best List for 2016.

I omitted Alpha simply because it’s on our “Top 10 Most Popular” list (based on reader stats, aka, which posts were read the most). I tried not to double up, but I have about 5 or 6 “best of” lists headed your way! Also, Escape is on the “no-loft” list since the Vintage has a downstairs bedroom.

Are all your Top 10 lists solely for THOWs? There were plenty of small foundation houses, cabins and such, that deserve a list too! (I liked that 350 sq ft one in Binghamton NY.) You can’t discount them solely because they were expensive, since the price often included valuable land. And what about Park Models… I’m not sure whether they are classified as THOWs.

Hi Oxide. You are so right! I am going to make one for shipping containers too. I just wanted to try and compare apples to apples. In some cases a foundation home is “better” than a THOW simply because you don’t have the darned 8.5 ft. rule. Alex and I chatted and decided we’d stick to THOWs for most of our lists, but once I do the other few maybe I’ll do one for foundation homes as well 🙂

      Ah yes 🙂

All of these are loft designs, why not something that’s not?
    Thanks,

I tried to include multiple homes that had downstairs bedroom options, but I’m also going to make a list of 10 Best No-Loft tiny houses, so stay tuned 🙂

I like #1 the bet and my second favorite is #10. Love so many features of these tiny houses. I tend to love the stained wood on the ceiling look, but also love the bright pops of color in #10. What a hard choice, they’re all so neat!

I know! And so different, too.

For design & coziness I pick #3-Zyl Vardos and I’m not fond of orange. But he does the most with the least! Next is #6-Sweetgrass for the downstairs bedroom, also for the Robin egg blue color. Honorable mention is #8 for all the light! Put a w/d in one of these and that is the pick! Thanks for the list.

Our pleasure 🙂 I don’t like the orange either but it works somehow haha.

The problem for me is I like a lot of bits and pieces of different houses more than I like one completely. I think I’d have to go with Shedsistence though for that practical yet very aesthetically pleasing roof line. The colours of Sweetgrass are really appealing too. Can’t remember where I saw it but there was a hideaway staircase in one place that slid back into a storage cabinet when not needed that really looked like a good idea too. Overall must have design features for me are lots of natural light, functional but not overly large kitchens and baths, built ins not laid out like old RVs with a small walkway between, staircase to loft rather than ladder, and a comfy downstairs lounging area that can be used for sleeping with minimal conversion, preferably facing French doors or large windows.

It is hard to pick just one! Trust me, I left so many great ones out!

Zyl Vardos, IMO, is in a class all his own. All the picks are great, but I just saw a real winner:) Tave’s DIY Under-$20K Tiny House represents what the THOW concept is truly about. A person with a dream, a bit of money, and a real desire to live “less”. Her home is the perfect example of determination, sweat equity, and good common sense. She is an positive, hopeful, example to us all:)

That she is! 🙂 Too bad we didn’t get to her in 2016 or I could have had it on this list.

Thanks for sharing your home with all of us. And great idea — actually Natalie’s already got a D.I.Y. version of this in the works (look out for it next week or maybe even in this weekend)! 😀
