Tiny house Rhapsodie: Baluchon’s Build for Living & Working

This post contains affiliate links.

This is Guillaume’s custom-built THOW by Baluchon that has a real music studio inside so he can work where he lives! Awesome.

The tiny house has lots of nautical additions that Guillaume loves, and even vaguely resembles a boat from the outside. The lofts connected by a footbridge are a cool feature of this home. There’s a compact kitchen at one end of the house, with a little washing machine tucked under the countertop.

Enjoy the photo tour below! Baluchon builds are only available in France, but you can check out the website here.

If I ever won the lottery (if I remember to play 😕) I would buy this for my son.

they lost an entire corner of the kitchen for the washing machine and only get partial use of the only base cabinet because it has the sink in it – that little slide out cupboard is useful but not like a full cabinet would be. That microwave would be impossi.ble for many people to reach and open shelves on the walls and countertops might be popular but they just look cluttered/messy too easily in such a small space. Is there a vent fan in the bathroom ? Is there a heat/ac unit and if not there should at least be an overhead fan for air circulation

If you have any questions, it does appear the owner is answering people on his Facebook page and Facebook does have a translate feature…

But from what I can gather the home is equipped with a Lunos double-flow CMV + air extractor. So whole house ventilation instead of location specific. Along with an advance vapor barrier that adapts to winter and summer conditions…

Doesn’t mention it but there appears to be a wall heater unit between the folding table and music studio… While that’s actually a Panasonic toaster oven, which should actually be pretty easy to reach for most people…

Mind, the average person can reach the back wall of a kitchen counter top and that’s normally a depth of 24″. However, in a THOW it can be 18″ to 21″ and that would make it even easier to reach. Basically, anything within 24″ radius of where you’re standing, from your shoulder, is within the reach of most people before they even need to lean over much and that toaster oven door is well within that radius…

Open vs closed shelving/cabinets is actually not about popularity for most people but preference. Since, there’s a list of pros and cons to both. People just won’t all agree on them but there are reasons why people choose one or the other. Like some people consider the clutter inside a closed cabinet worse and prefer just to keep everything organized and in sight, for example… It’s one of those things that it depends on how you look at it and what you prefer…

Loss of the corner can also be considered debatable as that’s assuming they’re not using it for something else. For example, that is likely where they put the water heater and that prevents it taking up space somewhere else and puts it right in the middle of all the hot water needs of the home where it’s most efficient to place it…

Corners are notoriously hard to make use of anyway and with the bathroom wall right there, there isn’t much space to be able to access that corner even if there was no washer there… Besides, the under sink cabinet is likely connected to that corner and thus you should still be able to reach in there from there…

Mind, the owner prioritized the living space and room for the music studio and wanted separation from the other spaces. Unlike most homes showcased by this builder, this one is shown with the owner already living in it. Most of the photos are from the owner’s Facebook page… So it’s all what he preferred and shown how he’s actually using it… Details like the loft above the kitchen was specifically raised a bit higher to give more vertical space to the kitchen, so he can make use of shelving space, is an example of decisions he made to optimize the space for how he uses it…

While mind climate can effect designs and this is in France, range of weather conditions aren’t as wide or extreme as they can be in the states. Some places you don’t need much to keep the home comfortable, even year round…

European windows are also designed to make it easy to get cross ventilation going, along with all being double glazed for energy efficiency…

So much of it is just what makes sense for this specific owner, the location, and the lifestyle the owner wants to have but a different owner, in a different location, may need up to a completely different design.
