Um, no. I can’t imagine. How about some pix showing how that staircase changes the interior spaces? This company’s work is generally excellent, so I want to see the inside.

      Yes please!
What does the inside look like?!

What a awesome idea! You could have some great parties up there!!

Did you need to make the tiny house wider to accommodate the outside staircase? How does this affec the interior? Can we see pictures of the inside, too?

Outdoor staircase? Think not. Open invite to trespass, anything from squirrels, cats, dogs, kids, to drunks and dopers. In bear country you could add in bears. If you’re going to have something like that on top, at least put the entrance inside. Probably get birds roosting on those railings too. I’ll pass.

As a Mom, I can say that there are ways to effectively block areas, Theo. I would love the rooftop for my container herb gardens.

From small children certainly, older children I doubt it. Which would still leave squirrels, cats, racoons, et al. Personally, I would have a indoor hydroponic garden, they need not take up much space, and look good. According to my research a 4 sq foot hydroponic garden can provide a family of four with fresh veggies year round – and I have been doing a LOT of research, for a long, long, time.

So, lots of research and no practical experience… 4 sq ft would not keep you in fresh vegetables year round. Maybe some vegetables but certainly not a decent variety of vegetables.

As a matter of fact, I actually DO have some experience – which doesn’t stop me from researching. And the 4 sq feet is not just a flat are as you seem to imply, it is the floor space taken up, it does not include the multiple levels. As far as variety, hydroponics have been and are being used to grow, lettuce, corn, carrots, rice, and the list goes on. You pull a plant, you put in a seed. Do some research.

I would welcome a few cats on my rooftop deck. Especially if they are friendly and purr. 🙂

I love how this is a cool feature and the first thing people worry about is having “drunks and dopers” wandering up on your roof. Seriously?

Well maybe, just maybe, those commenters come from parts of the country where that WOULD be a problem.

Personally, I’d be worried if a fat lady came up and sang. THEN… I’d know its over… (rg&dfc)

You’d first have to know who the “fat lady” was and what song she sang.

yeah. I like the idea, but it looks like it would take up a lot of space from the inside. On my tiny house, I’m going to have a skylight in the loft that will lead to the rooftop space. definitely no parties up there, but hydroponics sounds great.

Speaking of hydroponics, 4 sq ft of space, when counting vertical, could be anything, as there could be an untold amount of flats. When talking about this, you really need to specify that.
Still, hydroponics is a really good idea, especially for tiny housers looking to be more self sustainable.

Definitely unique. Glad someone had the idea and tried it. Great concept. Sparks ideas. Something doesn’t quite work for me. Not exactly sure why. But the deeds and the words get me to thinking critically and creatively. And that’s good.

THEO: Hydroponics is a subject I’m very interested in. Do you have a website with info? or could you tell us the best place to go for this kind of info? I would love to try this. Thank you for putting this information up. 😀

Just google hydroponics, you’ll get loads of hits. Then just look around until you find something that interests you. You can buy setups, but it’s not rocket science to build your own, and there are instructions aplenty. Google drip irrigation, somewhat related to hydroponics, and quite interesting – some farmers are using that now rather than irrigation or spraying water, more water gets to the plants, and uses a lot less water. I won’t suggest a site, because what interests you might well not interest you. It just struck me, there’s probably even videos on youtube. There are numerous books out there too, so you might want to check your local library, or used book store. I very seldom buy new books, most of what I am interested in are expensive, but a used book store will often have a $30-40 new book, at $5-10 and often in as new condition.

I had the privilege of seeing this house in Austin Texas Last week. It is really cute. Sadly, it’s a hot mess. The roof leaks when it rains, the air conditioner run off runs between the wall. And other issues. This young lady is devastated. What makes it worse is the builder refuses to make any corrections or to help the owner in anyway. Maybe that should be an article in Tiny House Talk!

She would get a lot more benefit by contacting one of the local TV stations, most stations have a troubleshooter for just such situations as this. Around here that usually gets some quick, and favorable, reaction from the responsible people. They don’t like people being told they don’t stand behind their work.
