Tiny House Nation TV Show: Wednesday Nights

This post contains affiliate links.

Just in case you’re not aware yet I wanted to let you know that the new Tiny House Nation TV show premiers this Wednesday July 9th, at 10 PM EST on the FYI Network. After that you can catch it every Wednesday night for a new episode. Pretty awesome, right?

The hosts, John Weisbarth and Zack Giffin, travel across the country to show us small spaces and the creative people that build and live in them. From micro apartments in the city to reclaimed trains turned into homes, the point of the show is to share how size doesn’t really always matter and that what really counts is creativity.

I just set my TV to record the show automatically in case I forget to tune in. I have U-Verse TV, and didn’t have any problem finding fyi in the guide. I think it was formerly the BIO network – lots of shows about chefs and the “Flipping Vegas” and all the other “Flipping” shows. I’m sure Dish has it also.

While I’m disappointed this doesn’t cover the more technical aspects, I do like how it covers the practical side of things. In the first episode, the very real issue came up of where the wee one was going to play. It’s stuff like that that I don’t think people always factor in. We, as adults, really just need a bed and a flat surface for whatever, but kids need space to play. The second episode brings this up nicely with the issue of the two teenagers. Anyone who has ever lived with or raised more than one teenager at the same time knows that they have to have their own space, even if it’s just a corner of a room. Bloody coups and hostage crises will arise otherwise. And then there’s the issue of “privacy” for adults. C’mon now. We all know what that means, but that’s not always something people consider especially when constructing sleeping lofts or close quarters with the kiddos. There’s also the issue of downsizing physically and mentally. We can all do without that end table by the back door where we throw our keys and the mail, but can we do without the artwork we painted, the family mementos? While I would like to see more of the engineering aspect, I think this show is doing the small house movement a favor in presenting the more “human” side of tiny and small living.

The whole tiny house movement, if there is such a thing expects us to believe whatever they tell is. They show some designer who built “the Crib”, the man clearly said it was a weekender. The Caboose is a hotel room. The people in episode two, clearly built the 30K Cabin to rent out. The people in episode three, rented out the main house and are now buying some land, again to move the tiny house “Cabin” to their land, for weekend getaways. The wheels allow them to violate zoning laws. Must make the neighbors happy, to have a over-sized shed in the side yard. A dog under the eating table? Really?

Good points to bring up Stewy. I like talking about this kind of stuff. It’s not *always* this way. Some people really do live happily and very simply in tiny homes for long periods of time. But yes, for many, tiny houses are just sort of like a ‘tool’ to they can use for a while. They might live in it inexpensively so they can save up for a few years (to buy land w/ a ‘small’ cabin maybe?). Or they might use a tiny house as something to rent out. Some people love tiny houses but they know they can’t live in one because they have family. So instead they might decide to get one anyway but rent it out or just use it as a less expensive version of a guest house. There are lots of ways to use tiny houses and it’s kind of fun to explore that. It’s not only about living in them simply indefinitely. Some of us go through stages though where it’s appropriate and beneficial to live tiny. Otherwise we can still learn from simple living and apply some of it to our lives (even if you live in a big house).

Wait, where did you get that the Tennesee couple is just planning to rent out their cabin? Is this info online, somewhere? Because that isn’t what I got from the episode.

I’ve been following the show. Love the first 4 episodes and am a huge tiny house enthusiast. However I have one suggestion that I did not see much info on during the show. For these tiny homes. What are you guys using for electricity, toilets, running water. Especially for those that are tow behinds and won’t be a permanent home. and what would you recommend for people who want to live off the grid? 🙂

Our entire family LOVE this show! I would like to live this type of lifestyle but multiple reasons make it unrealistic at this time. I hope at some point they can show small homes for families that need 3 sleeping spaces. I have a boy and two girls, I’m disabled and have parents that frequently stay with us, one that is also disabled. I’ve been searching for tiny homes that have 3 bedroom areas and a basement option with no luck. Until that time I will watch the show and dream it could be me.

In one show there was an expandable console dining table. I would love one for my tiny house. I can only find one in white. Did the guys build it or was it purchased? If purchased can you give me a website for it? Thanks so much. Love the show

Since a lot of women like the frozen movie castle , why not do a tiny house like that ? When you walk have the stairs on both sides of the hallway that light up like ice & would go up stairs to the bedroom or what ever & have the outside look like the ice castle as well . Use the stairs as storage for clothes or what ever & at the high point of the stairs on the side be able to hang coats & shoes . It could be a lady’s dream castle & she could still have her prince charming . lol have the whole thing look like ice & snow.

As of Nov. 29, 2016 Beloved FYI 115/874 channel is going to Digital Preferred and everybody who is a fan of Tiny House Nation won’t be watching it and I am NOT buying D. Preferred. Can some other channel like DIY or HG/TV pick it up? This really sucks! Can anything be done?
