Two Tiny House Fair Scholarships Available or Help Us Fund More

This post contains affiliate links.

Elaine over at Tiny House Community has done a great job of organizing the 2013 Tiny House Fair at Yestermorrow Design Build School in Vermont.

She just announced scholarships for the fair that she needs help funding. I’ll just let her do the talking. But I can assure you that the money she raises here will be put to good use this summer.

Scholarships for the Tiny House Fair at Yestermorrow

Before I hand it over to Elaine I want you to know that contributing to the scholarship is completely optional. Please only do so if you really want to. If not no worries! Feel free to check out our other tiny home photo/video posts in the Tiny Houses category instead.

How to Get a Scholarship

Elaine’s going to explain that in a moment below, but basically you submit an essay.

How to Help Us Fund Scholarships

We’re only looking for two scholarships but with your help we might be able to offer a few more. Click here to learn how to contribute to the scholarships.

Introduction

elaine-tiny-house-communityHi, I’m Elaine Walker of the Tiny House Community website.

I’m organizing the Tiny House Fair hosted by the Yestermorrow Design/Build School (nonprofit) this June 14 through 16. We have a terrific line up of presenters* from across the country who will share their expertise in specialized carpentry, creative design, legal issues, systems (solar, water, toilets for a tiny house), sharecropping, and community formation. They will also talk about their personal experiences in downsizing and what it’s like to live in a tiny house.

Tiny houses encourage intentional living and thoughtful ownership. We would like to open the workshop to people who are unable to afford the registration fee. This campaign seeks funding for 2 scholarships.

What We Need

Many attendees have already registered for the fair, but some folks who would love to come cannot afford it. This campaign is intended to fund a minimum of 2 scholarships for tiny house fair, $340 per attendee:

  • $300 for registration (includes meals)
  •  $20 for on-campus camping
  •  $20 for gas or other expenses

Scholarship awardees are responsible for their own travel to and from Waitsfield, VT, and will need to bring their own camping equipment.

How Scholarships will be Awarded

Applicants will be chosen based on an essay contest. The subject will be “How Tiny Houses can Benefit Society”. Essays may be of any length and can include photos, but not videos. Essays should be sent to [email protected].

Winners will be selected by popular vote. This campaign will be updated later with a link to the essays and voting tool.

Contributions to our campaign, while much appreciated, will have no effect on the selection of the winners.

If we don’t reach our goal of $680, your money will be refunded. If we exceed our goal, we will award more scholarships (full or partial).

P.S. The small photo is of my Mom and Dad, in front of my tiny house when I lived in California. I have since moved to Florida to be near my folks, and my tiny house is in the nation’s first tiny house community, Boneyard Studios. Two of Boneyard’s founders will be at the fair to share their experience in forming a tiny house community.

Elaine, how wonderful that you’re doing this! Wish I had $ to contribute, time to write the essay, & time to go to the fair…. hoping for next year. Loved seeing your parents in front of Indulgent Restraint!

To whom may be able to help,

I have been researching design of various tiny homes, yurts, container homes, and sailboat living for the last 2 years.

I am a mother of 2 young children who divorced in 2018. I am 50 years old and after mostly raising my children, along with minimal side jobs, I am faced with a rehabilitative alimony payment due to decrease in a year.

I will have a meager percentage of a retirement that will not afford me a life without work unless I remarry. I dont want to be forced into marrying due to financial stability. I live in a 3000 sq ft house now but in my life have lived in studio apartments and have been plenty happy. My children are excited at the possibility of going tiny and I am tired of being strapped with enormous utility bills and house work.

I work at a school now so I have time to be with my children as much as possible. We forage, have chickens, and a huge garden every year to help out and because it is more healthy.

Do you know what the rules of sq footage is in most Vermont towns. I have a savings that I would like to apply towards building a tiny home and placing it on land. Im also interested in going off grid and building more off grid tiny homes as a business as a type of pandemic style hotel system. I feel that if visitors have a possible way of being secluded while in their stay they will feel more safe.

Is it impossible to have compost only and grey water plant filtration like in the White River Junction Welcome Center on a personal level? I like the incinerator toilet that can provide immediate fertilizer for the garden.

Please let me know what you think. I do have carpentry skills and am interested in Permaculture gardening. I do the Back to Eden garden method alongside Companion Planting now and over the past 3 years. Im very interested in Zero Energy building and am interested in about 450 sq ft either on wheels or foundation.
My parents live in Oklahoma and they are elderly. I was hoping to make a tiny house there eventually too. My children need exposure to their grandparents there but need to remain in school here in Addison County.

I welcome any advice you may depart with.

    Aimee Duplissis
