They Sold Their 5,000 Sq. Ft. Home & Built A Luxury DIY Tiny House!

I think most of us would agree that a 5,000 square foot house for two people is…excessive. That’s why this couple decided to sell their mansion and build their very own tiny house on wheels with all the bells and whistles. They’ve significantly reduced their overall footprint, and we should commend them for that.

Considering all the high-end features in this build, the $125,000 they spent in materials is actually pretty reasonable! And I love that they set out to do the build themselves when they probably could have afforded to contract it out. Plus the entire home is off-grid, with an awesome solar system and even a composting toilet!

The kitchen is any cook’s dream, and they have a roof-top patio that’s absolutely dream. Enjoy the video tour from Jenna at Tiny House Giant Journey below.

I love following the tiny house ideas, which are applicable to big houses too. Let’s face it, lifestyle ahs a lot to do with going tiny. I for one am an Artist, with a studio and work spread all over my home, which, since everyone has moved out, would be considered too big for one person. I also do my own maintenance and love doing wood work. Cinco the cat lives with me, so we are a family of two, considering adoption a compatible dog. This tiny house is so well planned out, functional, and beautiful. I love it!

Very true! Hobbies can definitely take up space, but they also help with our mental health.

I am amazed and wandering why people need to live in 5000 square feet house, if they don’t have 12 kids!

    Thanks

Gosh, what a gorgeous home! I especially love the kitchen ~ the storage, appliances and the ability to open it up to outside.

Yes the opening-it-up feature really makes it! Especially if they chase the warm weather.

This is beautiful and moreso for the fact that they built it themselves. That must be such a feeling of accomplishment. Thanks for sharing.

@Jan – The Wood Stove is the Dwarf from Tiny Wood Stove… One of the few companies that caters specifically to tiny homes…

While the 4 burner gas cook top brand is WOLF… Same company produces Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove for refrigeration, cooking, and dish washing products for luxury high end homes and commercial spaces…

Hope there not palanning on moving that tiny home anywhere else if it over 102 inches.
Because that’s as wide as it came be to be hauled down streets and highways in the U.S.
I don’t think alot of people buying these tiny houses realize that. It use to be 96 inches
but it got raised to 102 inches back about 15 years ago.
Any wider than that and your required to have a vehicle in front and one behind with lights flashing
and a sign on it that says wide load. and you can only travel at a certain speed.
All RVs are no wider than 102 inches. (Federal Law)

@SDW – Generally not much of a issue, over size products and vehicles travel across the country all the time. Getting the moving permit can often be done online and you just need one for each state you go through and go through within the scheduled time period. While escorts are not always required and in some parts of the country you can even get a long term permit that will last for a set number of months for a small fee… It just requires planning and usually route approval…

There’s also moving companies that will take care of all the details for you and even ensure the home during travel… So less convenient but can still be done…

Btw, local road maximum width can be much less than 102 inches. So you can need moving permits and oversize load stickers when traveling along local roads and not the highway… While the following states…

    Alabama
    Arizona
    Delaware
    D.C.
    Florida
    Georgia
    Illinois
    Kentucky
    Louisiana
    Maryland
    Michigan
    North Carolina
    West Virginia

All restrict 102-inch wide vehicles to interstate highways and other designated routes only… Massachusetts and New Hampshire add a twist in that 102 inches is legal, but that must include your side mirrors too. So the actual vehicle has to be less than 102 inches… Approved roads can also vary in width but usually are 12 feet wide lanes, with some states allowing more narrow roads…

While not all RV’s are meant to be moved all the time… Park Model RV’s, for example are still classified as a type of RV but can be 10-12 feet wide.

Then there’s manufactured houses, which will also tend to be wider but also require a special license specifically for moving manufactured houses…

Too much weight can also be a factor and trigger the need for a special license but that requirement depends on the state that issues your license…

There’s also over height permits if you need to transport something that’s higher than 13′ 6″… Though, western states can have higher max height limits of 14′ with examples like Alaska allowing up to 15’…

So it can be complex but research the route you’ll take and it can be done…

Such an inspiring story and beautiful home. Well done you did it yourselves which is really the best part other than the actual downsizing. Just found out my ex bought a 7500 sf home that he has his dementia second wife in and his 22 year old gf in. What a reversal of what most people are doing….I live in a tiny by choice myself.
