They Built Their Kids Their Own Earthbag Tiny Homes/Big Bedrooms

Well this is one inspirational family! After their mother got sick, she ended up turning to natural methods and clean eating to help her body heal. This took the family on a journey from city life to homesteading in the country. Part of their homesteading adventure included building alternative, inexpensive dwellings so they could live mortgage-free!

About seven years ago they had the idea that they’d build each of their four children their own tiny house/bedroom out of earthbags. They just recently completed the last one for their daughter, Shae. And even though altogether the family has far more than a tiny house, it’s amazing that they all worked together to create these inexpensive dwellings for their kids!

It took about 35 weeks for them to create this latest earthbag home, so they created a 1.5 hour video capturing the process. The last 10 minutes or so will show you a walk-through of the finished product. Enjoy!

All Four Kids Have Their Own Earthbag Bedrooms!

This is Shae, and her pup which is moving in with her.

The finished product! Shae’s bedroom!

From the sky, it’s a heart-shape.

She wants a bed on the roof for stargazing.

Here you can see more of the earthbag bedrooms.

And even more of them!

The little patio going in by the front door.

This is a wonderful idea and perfect execution! Even better than the beautiful wee dwelling is the joy of the family as they enjoy each other and working together! Thanks.

I love those kids, those parents, those dogs–you all are HGTV-worthy. I am only 30 minutes in on the video, but I am so enjoying your dialog, playfulness, smartfulness, and fun life. You are working hard, but enjoying your work and each other. The camera loves you. Kudos to the parents and to these adult kids who are obviously fabulous people, each one. May God bless you in all you do going forward. I’m a doggy mom, loving my own home, and thinking of going tiny one day, which is how I found you (on the TinyHouseTalk listserve). May you have many happy years on your homestead in your earthbag bedrooms with those yummy pups.

Where is this located. Would love to do the same and would love to know where you can build these types of living quarters without state restrictions. Is there a main house for bathing and kitchen. What type of costs is involved. Thanks. Kathleen. Hope to hear from you

I believe they’re located in Arizona. They have more videos on the cost relating to earthbag houses they’ve build if you check out their youtube channel mylittlehomestead. From what I’ve seen they do have a main house and also an outdoor shower (they’re currently building an outdoor bath as well). I’ve been a fan for a while, they have great creative projects going often.

Yes I believe their main house is a strawbale home.

Not only are the tiny homes creative and beautiful, so is the family. I can’t tell you how wonderful it was watching a family work so closely together and have so much fun doing it. I watched a few more things on the site, like the caterpillar video, and laughed and laughed. So much humor in one family. It was wonderful to kind of get to know you guys through what we have seen. God bless and be safe!

I would like to know where you can build like this. How do you get permitted for this type of building. It would be perfect for Southern Utah or Northern Arizona.

Hmmm permitting is so tricky. It changes from town to town so it’s very difficult to create some kind of database. That said, if you’re in an unzoned area and own enough property that your neighbors don’t care, you can get away with most anything haha.

Wonderful idea for kids that are basically grown young adults & can live on their own. I love these houses & think the options with design are limitless.
These homes are affordable & can be designed to each persons wants & needs. The sky is the limit when it comes to design for these homes.
This is something I would be very happy in. I love this family & how happy they are, helping each other & having such a close relationship with each other. Its lovely to watch & I have enjoyed all their videos on You Tube.
    Peace

Yes it’s really nice! It looks like the kids are interested in staying “home,” but still get to feel like they have an adult space!

This is awesome. 46 years ago my son Shay was born. I always loved the name and they way you can spell the name. Love the Earth-bag rooms. Never really seen this before. I have watched the video but was late for an appointment and didn’t comment. This is something that can benefit these kids. Is knowledge. Am impressed. This is something to actually consider.
