The Skinny House (Spite House) is For Sale in Boston

The story goes that there were two brothers: One went to fight in the Civil War, while the other remained in Boston. During the war, their father died, and the Boston brother built an expansive home on the land the brothers inherited.

When Civil War brother came home, he found all that was left for him was a measly piece of land, which the Boston brother considered too small for a house. So, out of spite, the Civil War brother built a 10-foot-wide home that reportedly blocked the sunlight and views from the Boston brother’s mansion.

The Spite House sold last back in 2017, but it’s for sale again — for a whopping $1.2 million! The home is more a “small” home than a tiny one, at just about 1,200 square feet. It has four floors, each one long and skinny, kind of like four THOWs stacked on top of each other.

It’s definitely up there but it’s actually still far from being the most expensive. In some of the most competitive real estate markets in the country, homes as small as 600 square feet can sell for more than $1 million.

The actual most expensive, an 800 square foot pied a’ terre at the Setai, in the Miami Beach area, was on the market for $2.5 million back in 2015, imagine what it would go for now for what would be the most expensive in 2021…

While the upper end of luxury custom built RV’s exceeds $3 million, just to show that price range isn’t limited to the real estate market… But that can pale in comparison to some apartments/condos in the most expensive cities in the world. Just rent can run into the millions per year, though, most are pretty large they have an extremely high premium per sq ft… 421 Broome St. Penthouse, in New York, for example, is valued at around $65 Million for 3,000 Sq Ft… Scale that to 1200 Sq Ft and it would be around $26 million but could be more because cost per sq ft doesn’t scale linearly…

Add, it can go even higher when you add the most expensive stuff in the world to go into the home… Like the most expensive couch is over $500,000… The most expensive 5.1 Audiophile Stereo System is worth over $5 million…

Fortunately, the most expensive properties still represents a very small percentage of the market but that should give a better idea of how extremely expensive it can get even for small or tiny properties…
