The Miter Box: Modern Tiny House on Wheels by Shelter Wise LLC

This post contains affiliate links.

This is the Miter Box Tiny House on Wheels. It’s designed by Shelter Wise LLC in Portland. And for a while, back in 2013, it was part of the Tiny House Hotel in Portland, Oregon.

You can still buy the tiny house plans from PAD Tiny Houses (they’re currently selling for $79.00) and you can use those plans to build your own version of the Miter Box or you can hire a contractor to do it for you (using the plans).

This tiny house was completed in June 2013. Its nickname is “The Miter Box” because of the precision of the project. This 90 square foot house features a dining table that converts into a queen bed, much like in many RVs. In addition, it offers two other lofts. And the bathroom is a wet bath.

Little House on the Prairie Meets Scandinavian Design! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!!! Crisp, clean, 2013 vs. 1813…I could eat it up with a spoon. I’ve visited their site and gave them 5 stars for concept and what their goal is in creating their compound.

“Pearls” can ALSO be a Girl’s Best Friend, along with diamonds.

FYI the Miter Box is actually 120 sqft, not sure why the Caravan has it at 90 sqft. This does not include the loft space, which is 24sqft (larger loft) and 16sqft (smaller storage loft).

Oh my…I so love it! It is SOOO zen! I could live there too. I live in Portland, I really need to get over there and see this place.
    Thanks for sharing. Namaste

I looked into the Caravan tiny house hotel, but $125/night is DEFINITELY not in my price range. Very disappointing.

What kind of wood is appropriate for the wet bath?

Most used are Redwood, Teak, cypress and some cedars.

Not that thrilled with the layout as not good seating and climbing over the other getting into and out of bed.

First item any TH is having good, comfortable seats, not flat benches, but well done soft comfortable one for each person living there.

Only then design the rest. You’ll spend a lot of time there, so take the little time, money needed to do it right. An inch here and there plus some angles and curves so small yet make al the difference.

And again the ‘door/porch’ takes space that could be better used for other things.

I have to say the Pearl is the cleanest design I have ever seen and I have been following these posts daily for the better part of a year. It is beautifull. I wouldnt be able to live in it and do it justice because I am naturally just messy but props to th designer! Also I just adore the name choice!

Its a modern interpretation of the traditional tiny house. However, as usual I dislike the loft and the wet bath both isn’t very practical for daily use. The sitting benches are providing storage but aren’t much comfy to sit on for long.

Agree. I would have the bed rest on seats/table, and hinged so you laid it against the wall when not in use. If you just ‘have’ to have a loft then it could be for storage. I think I would prefer the roof rounded also. The outside sides that are painted, or whatever, make it look like it is unfinished, should all be wood.

I love the design and choice of materials and colors. I’m not sure you’re still keeping up with this page but I have a question on the bathroom. I love the wood tiles and the walls but is it sealed? As in, the moisture from a shower can’t find it’s way between the panels on the wall, underneath the tiles, etc??? I am about to embark on building my own tiny house and the bathroom is one of my biggest concerns as far as sealing for longevity. I don’t want to worry about mold in the walls etc.
Overall, GREAT GREAT job on this house.

Venting is a MUST! Install a 12v fan to exhaust the water vapors. Install hardee backer with kerdi you’re good for years’ of worry-free service.

Cooking stove? Little refrigerator? Or is that a small refrig. under the counter? Heating for a Polar Vortex Maine winter? Needs comfy couch or relaxing chair – benches not comfortable. I do see most of (if not all) these Tiny Homes are on the West Coast. I’m certain there are many thousands of us on East Coast who would love to live in something like this, at a reasonable cost and built for the climate (no easy challenge!). Why not do an issue of your email on East Coast tiny homes and suppliers? Appreciate it. Thanks for your work.

I agree. I live on Long Island New York and have been trying to find Tiny House builders closer to home. Also, property here is very expensive, and any and all advise will be appreciated. Thanks

No longer at the Tiny House Hotel, currently For Sale in Portland Oregon. Go to Shelterwise.com to get all the details about the Miter Box. It was a hotel room (hence the lack of storage) and now can be easily made into full time living, we have many unique options for storage for the Miter Box. As you can see by the comments people have different ideas of what they want to store (we might talk you out of a vacuum storage though:)

Our large extended family doesn’t lend itself to having something this wee but THIS Tiny House has always been beloved by me. Pity that it isn’t available for rental any longer but I’m sure that the people who DID manage to rent it really enjoyed it.

I love the other name this house went by: The Pearl, as it truly is a ‘gem’.

I could totally live there! But someone else would have to climb the ladder. The only drawback I see to tiny houses, is that I’ve yet to see one equipped for the handicapped. But I appreciate the ones with bedroom AND bath on the same, lower floor.

House on wheels is awesome. You can get it transported anywhere! This type of house is like an adventure ride 🙂

I have seen this featured before, and I am glad you have repeated it Alex. This is the best tiny house on wheels, bar none, that I have ever seen. The clever FLUSHING toilet in the shower off to the side so it can be sat on when showering, to the cozy seating in the back under the loft that also converts to a sleeping area, to the clean crisp lines and design – there is nothing about this that I would change. Not to mention it is a perfect size – not one of these tiny house behemoths that one can barely pull, but not too small either so one doesn’t feel cramped. This is perfect and if I had a F150 to pull it I would buy it.

Does anyone know how they were able to avoid seams on the ceiling and walls? I believe this small little detail is partially what makes the room feel so much cleaner than many other tiny houses.

Went to there blog and was informed that it didn’t exist. I think you’ve run this before under a different name. Or an I thinking of the “Salsa” home? Anyway think both are great. Thanks!

    Amazingly clean design.
Seems like I’ve seen a lot of Florida and N. Carolina homes here, but maybe not so much for the colder climes.

    Derwin,
Loving the bath…I assume under the slatted wood floor is a metal or tile floor which contains the drain. I would very much like to convert my rubber stock tub which I am hating, into one similar to yours using teak slats on top of tile floor. My question is do the wood sections need to be removed for cleaning?

The new buildings of the future are wonderful. Simplicity, warmth, reduction of superfluous spaces and dynamism, as well as the possibility of transporting the house to another place. Just great !!
