The Love Shack Tiny House Boat

This Love Shack Tiny House Boat was submitted by Jeff & Sherry – share yours!

He purchased this and is in the process of wanting to fix this up to a comfy Love Shack. To be honest when he first bought it I was like, “what the heck! Is that an ice shack?”

Then I saw the passion that he had for wanting to fix it up… That is when I had to change it up to the Love Shack and after the first time we took it out on the water, people seem to really Love it – even just driving behind it as the back up person I had my window open and peoples comments were so fun to hear. One time a fire truck was coming back from a fire and one of the fire fighters said, “that is @!#%ing Awesome!” to his fellow fire fighters.

Then when we came in to dock after our first ride… There was a lady waiting on the dock – and she said that she lived on the lake and when she looked out her window she couldn’t believe what she saw – she told me that she picked up her phone and called her neighbor and said, “Lisa get out your binoculars and look there is an ice shack out on the lake.”

Then she said that when she saw us pass back by that she had to come down and take a better look. Anyway that is just a little tid bit I thought that I would share that Jeff probably wouldn’t have.

Anyway his goal is to fix it up to take on the many beautiful lakes in Maine and any input/help that could add would be a dream for him.

Thanks for your consideration . . .

Sincerely,
Sherry & Jeff

Update from Sherry below:

We have taken it out a few times rented a slip in neighboring town and I can’t begin to tell you how many people have asked to come in and see. And it really isn’t fixed the way Jeff dreams of fixing. Again input would be welcomed. 🙂 Thinking of adding a tri-toon for more stability.

If you know of any great places (lakes in or near Maine) for Jeff & Sherry to explore with their tiny house boat please share in the comments below. Thank you!

Love it! My favourite lakes in Maine are Great Pond, at Belgrade Lakes, and Mooselookmeguntic – I’ve canoes both and sailed Great Pond but both have great shore lines and good fishing. Have a wonderful summer.

        Hi alex,

do you need to register the shack as a boat? Do you need to obey all boating regulations? Thanks.

Wow… you have lots of beautiful lakes up there to play on with this – it’s got so much potential. Myself, I’d be leery of anything loft wise – I’d be nervous to have the center of mass to high above the waterline. And with a decent filter/treatment system, you can draw water right from the lake. If I were ever to build a houseboat I’d be using a catamaran as a base as well. Good luck with this! I bet you’ll have lots of fun.

    Sherry & Jeff,
Sold she said! I’d buy that in a heartbeat and live in it full time. Will show it to my husband and see if he has any “inspector gadget” type ideas we could throw your way. It’s been our dream to live on a boat and/or in a tiny house and you’ve come up with the best of both worlds. Love the exterior and color choice for the trim and the interior woodwork. I agree with the fireman–it’s #@%&ing AWESOME!!!

Greetings. Just one or two H frame amas will do the trick.
Possibly design the floats so they are wide, and may even sit just on the surface, so they resist lifting forces.
Make up one with wood frames to test..even try different length frames..or hire an engineer to work out forces and desirable length.
Retract and swing upright to transport, or berth.
Have fun! Try Georgian Bay, Ontario….paradise. It a bit too far down here in Australia..

When ‘ice shack’ was mentioned, I looked at that lovely floor carefully to see if there might be a way of fishing from inside. I was thinking that perhaps you might even had a viewing box to see the bottom of the lake and what fish might be there to angle for. I used to love going out in the ocean but when the sun got to too, I would have longed for such a shack. Such a cool idea!

Sit on the end that has shade, and/or have an awning or patio umbrella. And underwater viewer, or whatever they are called, very simple to make. I’d spend my concern on where there is a loo, saw what looks like it could be one, however did not see mention of one. Didn’t see, or read of, sleeping accommodations. Or clothes storage. Or water storage. Rerun, to boot.

When I was a kid, about 60 yrs ago, we had a cottage on the Trent Canal system in southern Ontario… Trent Canal is a series of lakes joined together by locks, running from eastern Lake Ontario up to Georgian Bay (Lake Huron). One summer my dad came home with “The Thing”, we called it because no one knew what it really was. It was two pontoons joined together with a decking on top, a railing around, a small outboard engine at one end and a diving board on the other — and, in those days, was only used in the lumber industry on the lakes in the north. Today they are a common sight on the lakes. I remember my older brothers setting up a tent on it and took it for a weekend up through the locks to tour a few other lakes. I guess it was the forerunner of the Love Shack 🙂 We had so much fun with “The Thing”, just taking it out on the lake and using as a diving raft or touring around. It appears they now form the basis of many houseboats — seeing your Love Shack brings back many great memories. If you have an extended time to use it, possibly think of that trip, along the Trent Canal system going from lake to lake. Have fun!

LOL Mame – We used to have a cottage on Sturgeon Lake and we called boats like “The Thing” floating porches to differentiate them from the much hated Three Buoys Houseboats (great fun for the rentors but badly driven and poorly maintained) but from one end of the Trent-Severn Waterway to the other the key to a good boat ride was Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream. So, Jeff & Sherry – hope you have a good supplier of that essential item

How do you improve on perfection? Maybe attach a couple of flower pots to the porch? It’s great as its. Great job!

Given super duper insulation, I can see a lovely shack like this somewhere in southeastern Alaska. Obviously it does get cold there, but that’s where you consider what matters – temperature. Your home is absolutely lovely! Proper heating, and insulation, and clothing items and you can have a beautiful adventure up north!

I do hope you plan for a bathroom, because if you are going to live in it, you’ll need one. Also, make sure you put in a real kitchen. They have small, self-contained units with sink, fridge, burners, and oven designed for small spaces. When I was in seminary, my dorm apt. was a one-room apt. with a kitchen unit like that. Cooked many meals on it.

The loo need not be a problem. The simplest solution is a 5-gallon bucket with sawdust. Keep liquids out of it, add some sawdust now and then, plus something aromatic if you want. Here’s a link to a woman who is partially disabled, but outfitted her 20′ sailboat with a working model.

Yes adding another pontoon would be very smart judging from the waterline marks.
making it wider would ge better than just sticking one in the middle tjough that would work much better than present.
On the round pontoon the water should never be above 50% of the tube as bouyancy drops very fast if say 4 people were standing on one side, could go under, even roll it over.

What a neat looking houseboat! As for a “toilet”, a porta potty would work just fine.
That houseboat would be a hit at the Cobbosseecontee Lake Concert on the Water; held every summer on Cobbosseecontee Lake (Monmouth, Litchfield, West Gardiner, Manchester). Here’s a link to the club that sponsors that event: http://www.cycmaine.org/

What a wonderful “Love Boat” and such fun. I do agree with putting the pontoons out a little wider for stability — not so sure you need to make it a tri – as they have their own problems. You remind me of when I was a kid, we had a beach house on an inlet bay just off Bainbridge Island in Washington state, on the mainland there in Paulsbo. We built a raft, put a 10 horsepower outboard on it built a small cabin like structure on it, tied our power boat to it and motored it across the sound toward Seattle — almost made it all the way, but the coastguard stopped us and made us leave it up a side river — said it was unsafe and not licensed — even though we had the power boat that was. But have to say we had a lot of fun with that until then. I like the way you have the interior, the idea of an all-in-one little kitchen unit would be great and a marine toilet. Have many good times with it, you will have terrific l memories and super great times!!
